Grumble grumble, living with my parents sucks.

Soooooo, my parent have taken a penchant to opening my mail. The first time it was unintentional, but still idiotic. Second time, just idiotic. This third time, I don't know why they thought it was acceptable. The letter was clearly for me from my school. We live at the same address. However, I am a legal adult.

The content of the letter is irrelevant. In fact, it's be something I'd have to discuss with them later anyway.

My understanding: Opening another legal adult's mail is a crime even when they share the same address. So what legal recourse would one have in these circumstances?

NOTE: I'm likely not going to do anything about this apart from the passive-aggressive diatribe I already gave them. I just had a long emotional day and this was something that had already gotten under my skin. Figured it might spark some interesting discussion.

... suing your parents over opening your mail?

Yeah, it's annoying, but that's just a bit... much.

Do they make you pay rent/bills? Do you eat their food? I'm sure they've paid for it in some way.

Get the mail before they do one day, and open everything. : D

IRRELEVANT!!!

like I said, I'm not really going to do this. I'm just pissy, and I'd like to make a statement to the effect of "Despite the fact that I'm dependent on you and mentally unstable, I'm still a human being. Show me some goddamn respect."

But more importantly, I'm just curious about this issue for curiosities sake. Let's say there was some kind of obvious malicious intent involved, what kind of legal recourse would be taken?

Buy a dildo and a book called "How to Successfully Murder Your Parents." Then when they open your mail. BOOM. They're scared and confused.

Legal recourse?

Yah (I'm no para-legal, but I play one on TV), but you could get the court to issue you a legal document called a "Writ of intent to move out". I think that'd work.
