So, my band Star Commander is having it's last show.

and, I'm not sure how to feel yet.

I'm sorta bummed? Like, this was such a great band for such a long time. But, it's also been a constant source of stress and conflict. I'm fairly certain I'll know how I feel the moment the show is over.

So, I come to you, oh General Discussion, for a round of "Know That Feel". Discuss your thoughts, share stories, lament, rejoice, all of that.

Also, here's the FB event for our show, if you live around D/FW or just like looking at a bunch of people being bummed.

Last shows should always be epic. Shit on fire, bitties going wild, mayhem, euro disco dance parties (and disco balls) happening in tandem with the show...

The last show I played before I moved (but I'm moving back blah) but anyways, it was fun.

However, that's why I asked, are you guys straight edge? I saw the no booze, no drugs thing. Hell, the bassist was giving people hits before they came in to see us haha

It's the venue. 1919 is a DIY space, and doesn't allow drinking or drugs or any of that in order to like, stay open and away from police interference.

oh word. gotcha.

I assumed it was the venue thing, but just thought I'd ask. do something cool for the show. the band that played before us was also having a last show before the guitarist went to college. he took his guitar, smashed the drum set then broke his guitar.

please don't do that

shit, during a show last july, our drummer picked up his metal snare, and hucked it at his mounted tom, bending both.

:wha?:

I never got the whole "let's wreck our gear" thing. This band thought they were Nirvana, which they weren't.

at least it wasn't your stuff that got bent. drummers are... well drummers. can't explain that

If you're gonna do one you have three choices:

1 go all out, be totally epic, do a two hour set and play every song you ever wrote/covered, set shit/yourselves on fire, do an Eye and drive a grader through the venue, cry, things like that.

2 fuck with everyone by not playing any of your songs and instead doing two hours of feedback or inappropriate covers or something. I once sang in a hardcore band and for our last show I really wanted to just get up and play 'sparky's dream' by teenage fanclub.

3 this is the one I've ALWAYS wanted to do and so far no one has agreed to it: don't tell anyone the bands over, just play a normal show somewhere on a tuesday night and go 'oh yeah that was our last show'.

Like...the music I play the whole 'last show' thing can become a bit ridiculous with people who outright hate you singing your praises and whatever and like, that's why the last two appeal to me hah. But they can be a really fun way to do something special if you and the people who dug what you were doing really get into it.

I'm going to be playing one of these sometime early next year, I'm moving for grad school. I don't think the rest of the band is going to look at it that way, but I'm the one who schedules the practices/shows and buys all the gear. So when I leave all they'll have to play with is one amp, a drum-set and an acoustic guitar. I mean it might not be the end of the band, but...

It'll be hard because I've grown up with all these guys and we've been playing together for 10yrs now, we've become close enough that I think we could be called brothers, so I think for the last show we'll go all-out and hard. If I was you I'd play the fuck out of that set, or, if you decide you hate the band, play all you're stuff one fret off to make the rest of the band sound out of tune.

Last shows are always sad for me...and yet I find myself doing them a lot. Field Day's show was part of the Best Friend's Day event and Roy G Biv's last show was just another show, but we tried to do some weird shit and show our appreciation. I'm always deeply depressed because it's always when the band starts to get recognition and bigger offers...hopefully next time it'll go a little longer.

Good lucks to everyone

just did that earlier this month! it was definitely time for my band to end, we had known for a whole year ahead of time, but it's still a bummer to just not have it anymore. i'm glad we did a final show and gave our friends and ourselves something to sorta celebrate everything that the band was.

At least you know it is your last show the worst is when you play a crappy show and then it turns into your last show.

I would say for a legit last show you want to just make sure it ends in a way that is polarazing,
There cannot be middle ground, you either destroy or wander off at random.

This, a million times over. Or when you just play a regular show and realize a few weeks later that it was your last show. That happened with my last two bands, and it's so frustrating.

Wicked frustrating.

We had a dissaster show in a boxing ring where other guitarists amp crapped out had to borrow one just to finish. Boxing ring wasn't cool because they let us play in it but not touch the ropes. Also: The floor was hard to stand on and I have a bad habit of falling down at shows anyway. Went down like I got shot at least once and could barely stand up for most of the set. Didn't really realize till a few weeks later that it was the last show the band would ever play. (the last actual live band show I would ever play, going on 8 years now :( :(
Last accoustic show I played (and yeah i guess I broke up with my self) was in a mall coffee shop and there was a huge line of people.............................................................to see the friggen easter bunny, parked right next door.
