so i got to play one of these the other day. met a guy that bought it new ion the early late 70's. most would remember it as the guitar andy summers used in the synchronicity video. each string has it's own pickup which makes my mind go crazy with thoughts of six amps and pedalboards. it's a bitch to play as you have to keep your thumb placed perfectly in the center. pretty kool though. the freak in me liked it but it's not the best inversion of the electric guitar by any means.

it did have it's own timbre for sure. a bit on the treble-y side...very metallic..but consistent and smooth from string to string.
it tuned like a steinberger and was said to be extremely stable.

the guy picked it up early for cheap (he didn't say how much but he was a young musician in NYC in late 70' early 80's so ....) word is that one recently sold for 26,000 bux. ... i think a japanese art dude bought it....sumthin like that...

I've dreamed of having a pickup for each string to run parallel effects! Man, someone should revisit the idea.

Already at least a couple variants on it that breakout using the Roland GK pickups.

http://billbax.110mb.com/ is one.

if the frets are high enough off the center stem that could be the ultimate sitar-style-bending instrument. who needs a scalloped fingerboard when you can just dispense with the fingerboard entirely?

Really cool, I would LOVE to play one of those, but I guess I'll never get a chance :( 6 separate pickups is cool though, you could do some weird stuff there.

As cool as I think that could be, playing it must be a pain in the ass.
