+1 to Portland. Supposed to be a really easily navigated city with lots of cool stuff going on. I love Providence Rhode Island (where I live now) - it's a great city for people who don't like big cities. Fantastic art, food & culture, but alas the job market isn't great right now.

As someone who spent a lot of my adult life in Austin, I'll say not there. It ain't what it used to be by any stretch. Which basically leaves the too-damned-hot problem.

For practical info, what sort of skills/profession factor into locale decisions? Not a trustafarian, right?

I actually know people who do PR work in Dallas, so I know it's there, although they work for evil blood-sucking corporate monster in their faux independent shop. Dallas is survivable in terms of there being some small population that does different music/culture/food/consumption culture. Not ideal, but survivable.

For me, SF and Chicago would be too expensive in ratio to any cultural virtues. (I find Chicago horrendously overrated, even before cost of living is factored in.) I don't know much about KC or Madison, and maybe that's why they have some appeal, but I'd look at them. I'm guessing decent living costs and maybe not a critical mass of young people crowding out and undercutting each other for entry level jobs because they're in a "cool city." I did that with Austin and it wasn't worth it.

I love d/fw but really I just love Denton. Great music scene, small town feel, isn't soulless, doesn't blow balls.
