I'm still not sure if I want to get it as it eats lives, and something about paying for updates.
I have seen some rad stuff that people have done, though.

The not paying for updates thing is only partially true...if you bought the game pre-beta, then ALL future updates will be free. Beta and beyond though, there will be points where you'll have to purchase upgrades.
I go in fits of Minecraft obsession...I kind of use it as a calming activity. I don't play with enemies on, so I just get lost in exploring and building. It's really soothing.

I love turning off all the lights, putting on this song, and going cave exploring. It adds a ton of atmosphere, and makes it scary as shit when I'm high

Awww weak, I bought it really early into beta and I remember the thing said all future updates would be free, must have missed some fine print. It'll definitely go up to the full release I guess, and as long as any update I have to pay for is a big content addition and not bugfixes I'm probably ok with that.
I do love just exploring the world, landscapes can be weirdly beautiful despite just being made of blocks.

You don't nor ever will pay for updates. At least on PC.
As for the slow updates, well, yeah! They're only like 4 working on it.

It goes in cycles with me. Usually interspersed with rage quits when I loose my diamond gear.
