So I'm simultaneously joining indie and metalcore bands

And I need some suggestions for indie songs to learn that are pretty easy and quick. The guys in the metalcore band are friends of mine so I'm not worried, but I don't really know the guys in the indie band and I need to be able to show them some stuff. I don't know how to play a single indie song and I doubt they'd be all that into it if I started playing stuff like Between the Buried and Me.
* As to why I'm joining indie and metalcore bands when I listen to very little of either and don't know how to play anything like that - I'm kind of getting tired of the mental intensity and insane practicing it takes to play stuff like mathcore and tech death. I just want something less time demanding, and that there may actually be a chance of making a few bucks playing in Boston. At least for now.

Meh, nothing wrong in joining a band just for the sake of doing something.
As for songs, you could learn something by The Unicorns, or freak scene by Dinosaur Jr.
Anything by The Hives is a good way to go too.

Well, indie is a pretty broad term, but if I can certainly list off some classic foundational stuff for you to check out.
Anything by Superchunk. Their oldskool anthem was "Slack Motherfucker."
Anything by Sebadoh up to Bakesale. "Brand New Love" and "Skull" are two of my personal all-time faves.
Anything by Yo La Tengo. As albums, I'd suggest "Painful" and "I can Hear the Heart Beating as One." For a song, maybe "Sugarcube."
They may not know Versus, they kind of disappeared after the 90's, but I regard "Be-9" and "Blade of Grass" from "The Stars are Insane" as classic cuts.
Ummm... "Sister Jack" by Spoon.
"Chinatown," "Sideshow by the Seashore," or "23 Minutes in Brussels" by Luna (off the album Penthouse)
"Big Dipper" by Built to Spill. Also anything off their album "Keep It Like a Secret."
Hüsker Dü - anything off "Flip Your Wig"
Anything by the Pixies, especially anything from Surfer Rosa (especially "Where Is My Mind" or "Gigantic") or Doolittle (especially "Debaser" or "Wave of Mutilation" - extra cool points for learning the U.K. Surf Mix version)
Based on what little I know of your tastes, you should check out Polvo, and the album "Marquee Moon" by Television. These may be relevant as well.
EDIT: yes, anything by Dinosaur Jr would work nicely.
I don't know about the band you're trying out for, but if you stepped into an audition for one of my indie bands back in the day knowing any/all of the list, you'd get the gig in a hurry.

indie is independent....not specific music. People forget this.

This. I actually find the idea that indie is a style reallly insulting.

That's absolutely true, but it's also true that people feel the need to label things so they understand what they are. There's a whole bunch of bands who were/are on independent labels that got lumped together as "indie" who did tour together, play the same clubs, and have enough in common sonically that they were clearly related... the fact that people lumped them together as "indie" is unfortunate, but no-one has come up with a better term to describe 'em yet.

I miss when things for the most part were called rock, punk rock, metal, pop rock ect.. I can actually remember when alternative was stuff like primus and morphine and Dinosaur Jr. I liked that

Now we have post metal which is a term that does not fit what the bands sound like because post metal should be where metal leaves off so it would have to be more extreme then death and black metal and heavier then doom... For to be post a thing it must surpass a thing or it is bs.

I know... But most people understand "Indie" to be a type of sound. It's just easier than saying New Wave Folkish Alterna-Post Grunge/Punk Rock or some other ridiculous chain to that effect. I think it has been pretty established that "Indie" and "Independent" aren't the same thing anymore. The name "Indie" has been co-opted by a certain style of music.

"Post" when applied to a genre actually is supposed to mean using the instrumentation of that genre to create music which is not in sound or structure of that genre.

I hate the post-whatever naming convention, too. But it's named post-metal because of its evolution from post-rock, not from metal:
post-metal is to post-rock, as metal is to rock
i.e., heavier, darker, with more scream-y vocals (when there are vocals at all)
e.g. compare Isis to Mogwai

Are you suggesting that you're an authority in these definitions? Okay, dude.

Then it would be it's own thing and not..

This makes sense in a way but I feel it belittles those and all bands labeled as such.

I can see where you are going but still dislike the term with great violentness

I will fight this attitude til the day I die. Indie began as a designation of label status, but has since developed into a genre. If you want to be technical the term is indie-rock. I like that because it leaves out all the shitty, Bright-Eyes/M. Ward inspired, indie-folk acts from the last 10 years or so. Indie is just shortened. If you want to be purist about, you should be saying Rock n' Roll all the time.
Genres are good for talking about music. jfrey said "indie" and we knew what he was talking about. They have a distinct, semantic purpose.
Oh well, as they say, hipsters gonna hip
