this thread is so true. but i practiced for like an hour and a half today already so...
my cousin teaches music at the colllege level and therefore has a huge stick up his ass anytime anyone mentions music. he used to comment on my brother's and my facebook statuses telling us to go practice. i'm glad he deleted/blocked me because that shit was irrational yo

a steady hour a day with the instrument plus the brief returns to quickly check the ideas is good . Oh, and rehearsals

twice or at least once a week is good for ones soul

After the certain level that might be not enough. And, depending on the personal traits and the learning curve phase, the hour+ a day might be enough soon again.

Then again - playing is the primal motivation of itself, right?

: The everyday practising and playing with the band at rehearsals is supposed to be the reason to play in the first place. Practising should never be something one puts up with or simply thrashes through half bored, half absent minded.
When I was younger and started a demanding band, after playing in bands for some five years, I decided I had a lot learning to do. I had nothing much else to do, as a university student

, so I practised for hours and hours and hours to my neighbors endless joy. I went for rehearsal place, too, on my own, like in 6am at best. I was really determined and non-compromising and even unforgiving for anything that got on my way. Real stuck up, now that I think of myself.

ATM I'm about to spend a day with mhy tree kids and give my wife a whole day to work with her studies. Will later see to the future gig cover songs. With a family, at this point of life,

I have to compromise, for those who are the most needing.

like I said, no, You don't have to - You get to play, and then, after certain longish time, You get ever better in what is the best loved activity to You.
Practising six hours a day, tears inyour eyes, might not get You where You get by practising four hours a day filled with silent joy and enthusiasm. Just saying.

I used to be that guy that never practiced.
I get in weird moods when I am playing always putting myself down for the lack of what I can and can't do musically.
However since I have changed my life around I am a different person when it comes to playing. I generally spend anywhere from 5 minuets to an full hour noodling or doing what ever facies me the most. I still like a freak cheek the clock to see if I am putting in enough "time" but it gets more relaxing and more fun

the less I stress out. In my case quitting a band was the best thing I could have done and when I have kids I can still enjoy playing which is has become and important part of my life. And some day I can get back to jamming with people.

Haha I wasn't being serious. I usually practice from acouple minutes to several hrs a day. Typically I want to mess around with a ccertain riff or sound and will play with that...next thing I know I look at the clock and 3hrs have gone by. I always have a good time playing.
