so to brush up here's what I'd like you guys to do for me
ask questions, either technique-related, theory-related or whatever-related
and I'll do my best to answer them, if I'm wrong or don't really know or didn't fully answer the question please correct me and help me to help whomever ends up paying me to teach them. :D

also, I'm doing this because I need money for bills and because I wanna buy an ipad knockoff, or if this goes well an actual ipad...though I think I'd actually rather the knockoff as it runs on android.
and I think mr. Elbandito for planting the idea by straight up teling me to do it :D <3

Good rhythm base is great.

My guitar teacher has me doing this a lot and it works.

Basically trying to get the left hand and right hand to do stuff indepent from each other. So you right hand just keeps strumming 16th notes or whatever and just by lifting it off the strings or moving the left hand around do you change progressions and such.

Theory is good but not too much. Especially for young/beginning guitarists. A better motivation for them is to have them bring songs they'd like to learn and guide them through it (with added stuff from you ofcourse) but learning songs is A pretty good education B makes them feel like they can actually do something.

Scales.

Something that I am working on and every time I hammer a new one down it helps my playing that much more.

All 7 modes.

this. i had the fucking best bass teacher ever. i would bring cds in and we'd learn them, then he'd point out relevant theory stuff, scales, intervals, etc. he would inspire me to try to listen to music and write out the part at home, then bring it in and have him go over it. i got a lot better at playing by ear that way. i was 13 or so, and since i'd been in band the whole sheet music thing wasn't too hard. but i imagine if you're teaching kids who have no experience with reading music, i think it might be a bit different.

i miss him. he moved to chile or germany.

Oh and yeah ear thing is good.

My teacher always put on some jam track at the end and I had to figure out key and what scales would go well etc. etc. it works like a charm. You can start this easy by teaching them to tune by ear and with overtones and such. Or teaching them a pattern (say Minor pentatonic first position) and then have them run that pattern down the neck untill they feel all the notes fit in.

the idea behind economy picking is twofold.
the full name is "alternate economy picking"
alternate because you're still doing the up/down/up/d/u/d/u/d on any given string, reason being; so long as you're on a single string this is the most economical and fastest, most efficient way to do this.
economical because you're killing off all unnecessary movement and effort.

basically issues arise in strict alternate picking, when going to a string either above or below the one you're already at.
a quick example would be something like playing a C (3rd fret) on the A string 4 times, then playing an A on the E string (5th fret) twice before coming back down to the A to play the C note a two more times.
so you're playing this
E]------------5-5-------
A]--3-3-3-3------3-3--

with alternate picking you'd be playing d/u/d/u/d/u/d/u
what happens is that when switching strings you're putting in extra, unneeded effort into hitting the next note by raising your hand above string to pick it down.
you're playing C 4 times so you're doing this
CCCC
DUDU
the next motion to pick down, so you have to bring your pick up above the E string to play the A. So this is what you're doing
CCCCAACC
DUDUDUDU
that is to say; because we're so used to going strictly up/down/up/down we will continue to do so even when it requires more effort.

what alternate economic picking teaches is that it's more profitable to do this
CCCCAACC
DUDUUDDU

so instead of raising your hand up and wasting whatever effort and time it requires, you're simply doing the most economic and, really, ergonomic thing to do.
Your hand is already coming up so instead of using two motions to hit two notes, just use the one that you're already executing.
your right hand (assuming you're right handed) is coming up to hit the fourth C, as your pick hits the string and the note sounds keep the pick going in this direction to hit the first A. Once you hit the A you'll hit it the second time with a down stroke, upon hitting it you would keep the pick going to hit the next C and after you've hit it your next move is an up stroke

make sense?
if not, tell me whats unclear and I'll fix it :D

THE REST OF YOU DID NOT ASK QUESTIONS.
