Hey!
So, I had a really sweet old record player that I loved 'cuz it was my dad's, and then it just went fuckin crazy on me and start humming really bad. So I naturally took it apart to fix it and it just died there on the spot. Oh well.

The climax of this story is that my epic twenty-second birthday is quickly approaching. Time is running out, my friends. Teach me about sweet record players that won't cost me 2 grand but will still sound real nice. I have a ton of vinyl that's rotting away, and I don't want to let my groovy friends die.

You don't have to do that, bud. I don't want a hand out or anything, I'd like to get a new one. I just figured someone around here's probably really into vinyl and knows quite a bit about record players.. I wanted to see if maybe they'd help me find a good buy for the money or something.. I don't wanna get stuck with a crappy record player that costs like $300, yanno?

You gotta get a DJ turntable of some kind. Since the needles have adjustable weight I've actually been able to re-groove some scratched records, or at least keep them from skipping. The Numark's my good one, but then I have one of these in my living room http://www.amazon.com/Emerson-EME-NR303 ... B000793YUC. Not as good sounding as the Numark in my big soundsystem but more than adequate and convenient. $80.

In what I've read so far, it seems as though what really matters in regards to sound quality is the cartridge/needle you install into the player. Is that more or less true?

Just get a Stanton or some other turntable from CL or a pawn shop...

Those ones you listed are cheap and seem to have a ton of features but may not sound the best...

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure if those were 'cheap' or not. Never looked into getting a record player before (have always used my Dad's and not sure what happened to it).

Unless you NEED to have a digital out just get a good hi/fi or cheap dj turntable... The cartridge is what matters...

Thanks. I don't need any fancy features like digital out, I'd be nice but I just want to spin some vinyl for recreational purposes.
