no this isn't the beer thread but a companion tool for it, in a sense we're reviewing all the alcohol we taste. whether it be good or bad, wine or beer, whisky or vodka. We're giving it our opinion.
feel free to give us your take on a brew and how you compare it to others :D

I'll go first

first time trying the Gordon Biersch Marzen

its definitely an interesting one, very light, small bodied, it's almost like a baby IPA in that it definitely has some kind of hoppy-bitter flavor but has almost none of the after taste of a good IPA; after you swallow it it's almost entirely gone. I can best describe it as semi-bitter, semi-sweet, flavorful while in your mouth and smooth finish, it's nice and smokey and wilh a hoppy yet smooth taste and, myself (definitely not for everyone) would like like it on it's own and not with food.
It's by no means remarkable but I would probably use it to introduce people to new beers, namely, heffs.

Oh yeah you're stuck with it too. It ain't all bad though. There are a few good belgian beers easily available and some of the lagers are drinkable.
Not big on lager anyway but even so I went to Spain this summer. Every single one of their lagers wipe the floor with all dutch beers. Cheaper to....

Well I personally prefer Tripels and White beers, although the pilsner is nice for a night out

Buffalo Trace bourbon
Rating: 3 out of 3 sheets
I picked up a bottle a couple days ago to make mint juleps. It's smooth and flavorful, yet not overpowering like some bourbons out there. It really shines in an old-fashioned. Guess what? The bottle is gone now.

Ok my turn.

Heineken

One of my country's biggest exports but nonetheless rather worthless. It's averagely priced but is still not useful as a cheap way of getting drunk. On a very hot day when it is chilled to the bone it can be drunk. Otherwise don't bother.

Palm

A pleasant surprise from the neighbours. It's still officially a lager (I think) but it is darker of colour and stronger of taste with characteristics more reminiscent of a bitter. It's averagely priced but well worth the money. It lacks a certain richness to make it stand out as a 5 star beer but nonetheless a pleasure to drink

Grolsch

Another big dutch lager brand. Unlike most dutch lagers however it has taste. Nothing special or great about it. But when chilled a very decent beer.

Ballantine's finest

A big surprise. Very cheap whiskey and nothing special when you open the bottle and smell the bland standardish whiskey smell. But definitely worth it's price when it comes to taste. When drunk straight it has a sweet and spicy aroma that doesn't give you the feeling you're just tasting the alcohol. Tried it with coke as well. Wasn't too keen. The sweetness of the whiskey and the sweetness of the coke made the mixture a bit nauseating. I didn't have enough time to find a good mixture though. All in all great bang for your buck.

Delirium Tremens

This came recommended from a friend (who is a beer connoisseur), so I figured I'd give it a try. It's a Belgian style, had a nice amber color and those little bubbles that are reminiscent of a trippel. That said, I felt that the taste of it was kind of watery and plain. It reminded me more of a generic beer that you'd say "This is what _______ should taste like" with no real notes to grab me and say "Wow!" For the $9 a bottle, I found it very subpar and uninspiring.

Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale

I'm a huge fan of the regular Dead Guy, so when I found this, I thought I'd give it a go. Oh my God. It really stepped up the hoppiness, bitterness of the original and took it to another level. Flavors were deeper and richer, and the bitterness really bordered on that "it's an acquired taste" comment. Aside from the taste, it also took the alcohol to another level; having one glass, I figured I was staying at home for the night.

North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
One of my favorite beers. 9.4% alcohol by volume. Deep rich flavor. Hints of dark chocolate, dark fruit and a touch of coffee. Pleasant alcohol flavor content, not a punch in the mouth like some of the Stone Brewery offerings. Really balanced delicious stout. Love it. Buy it.

Hakutsuru Superior Junmai Ginjo [it's what I'm drinking right now so...]
This is becoming a fave, not too dry, not too sweet, really nice flavor, similar to Konishi classic shirayuki but lighter and more..."airy"

I also really like their Sayuri [Nigori sake] as well.

Dogfish Head:
Brewed locally in DE, I have taken the delicious tour twice before. They have really spread and are expanding to most of the East Coast now. I'll give a small review of my favorite pre-concert beer.

The 120-minute IPA-
$30 for a 4 pack, I know, it's expensive, but at 20% this IPA has quite a punch. The normal semi-bitter IPA taste is upped quite substantially, however, its after taste is one of perfection. Extremely hoppy, which is my thing, gives the aftertaste a mix of sweet and bitter.

They also make all kinds of crazy seasonal shit like half red-wine half beer drinks, one that they swear comes from a recipe found in the tomb of King Midas, as well as a Miles Davis' Bitches Brew.

mind you, i was already fairly well gone on a couple stiff rum and cokes, but i don't get any of the hate for bum wines like Wild Irish Rose and Thunderbird. it was like wine mixed with grape juice and sunny D and vodka. its a wonder underage college kids don't buy it more since its cheap and sweet. i mean, i would... do... did...


Great Lakes Oktoberfest

american marzen style with a bit more of a lean towards malt flavor which makes it superbly balanced. hints of caramel, and very fruity and floral. probably the best marzen i've had

Yuengling

basically the best cheap lager in america... the east coast... new england. its a weekday beer, so to speak, so nothing to write home about, but you'll probably bring some home. good pizza beer.

if i could remember the name of this oatmeal stout i had, i'd review that, but i don't.

I only just found out drinking in public is illegal in Spain. Which explains an awful lot of strange and menacing looks but also gives me an ecxuse to post some reviews.


Hertog Jan - Grand Prestige



A heavy and dark Dutch ale. With it's 10% ABV it's not a light beer for a warm summer's day. It has a certain liquorishy sweetness reminiscent of Guinness Special Export but with a more wine-ish bitterness to it which can feel a little bit conflicting to the mouth. Impressive colour and strong taste however make it a 4 star beer with perhaps other minor annoyances being the fact that it's reasonably expensive and hard to find

Don Pablo White Port



Admittedly I'm not big on white port in general but this was a big no-no. It smells alright and when matched with the right food it might do the trick. But by itself it is a methanolish tasting disappointment. The taste seems to be very urgent and escapes your mouth almost immediately after swallowing. Not worth it.

Douglas Scotch Ale



Damn fine beer. Not as malty as other scotch ales but with the same pleasant odour, colour and taste. It lies in a very comfortable spot between sweet and bitter which ale drinkers should love. For it's 8,6% it's easy to drink and never feels like a 'heavy' beer whilst retaining a certain amount of substance. If you can find it: Get it. Definitely one of my favourite new finds
