Pretty sure those are regarded as a technical nightmare.

If I recall correctly there are lots of horror stories of Ampeg cutting corners on Jackson's design to save money. In the end they end up being money sinks.

Maybe if the price is right and you're handy with a schematic and a soldering iron...

I might talk him down to 300. It has a really nasty sound to it.

And the demos I've heard with the 6550s are tasty. I keep on hearing that they have issues, but I don't know what kind of issues.

Don't buy it!!!! Had one... LOVED the tone, but google "ampeg vl-1002 molex connectors" and "ampeg vl-1002 heater mod" just do you know exactly what your getting into.

And yes Ampeg butchered Jackson's design to save a few pennies per build. The outcome? See above google searches...

Well, now I'm thinking of buying my buddies jcm 900 100 watt 2x12 combo and hooking it up to my park 4x12. You think I could doom out with a 900?

sounds like the fix is easy enough to apply. (he says after said quick google search and not having done it). Maybe bring it up and lowball offer then do the mods?

Lee Jackson himself did a ten part repair / mod video that used to be on youtube I have no idea if it still is or not. It does appear to be a simple fix but the molex connectors will eventually fail repeatedly regardless if you replace them or not just due to the construction method. Luckily the heater mod prolongs the period between replacements, and is a one time mod. Just trying to let em know what he's in for.

The amp does sound absolutely amazing, hands down. I preferred it over the Marshalls, and Mesas I tried back when I was into swedish metal pretty hardcore. Ran it through a Peavey MS412 (which also beat out the marshall and mesa cabs I tried) w/ sheffields. Man I mimss that rig for just plug in and play....

Best thing about the VL-1002?!?! Well Nigel's Marshall's may go to 11, but the VL goes to 24!

jcm 900s can sludge but maybe not doom. . . difference? doom need moooar bass. . . IMHO.

unless its a 100 watt 6550 900 then you might be getting somehwrre.
