The Doom Room: ILF Edition

So here's the promised pics of the new 12. I used it with the band today and it ended up getting set down till I work a few issues with it.



All in all, nice looking guitar, well constructed, EVERYTHING PLASTIC IS CRAP. So some will be getting replaced.

It looks super orange here, and it kinda is but it's more translucent than the pics show. the wood actually looks fairly decent. A shot of the neck join wich appears to be solid and well done.



Bridge and "Bigsby" I'm considering modding the trem so that there is a post for each string, right now it seems the took a regular one, and just doubled up the strings on it. I think it would be better and more stable with each string having its own post.



So the biggest issue I am having with it is the nut binds the strings during trem use and that throws it out of tune. A new nut should fix this issue.
Also, although the pups do sound sweet, my high end was getting buried when playing with bass and drums. This might be fixable by adjusting pickup height but I'm thinking about some deathbuckers in there already.

Overall for the guys who want an electric 12 on the cheap, I'd say go for it. the hardtail version won't present the problems that I am having. Be prepared to swap out the crappy tuners right off the bat, pickups I am still on the fence on, pots and caps are getting swapped out this afternoon. For $200 its a decent platform to make a player out of.

Phasers and ring mod I love pre dirt everything else after dirt. Ever since I got this Möbius I really have gotten to experiment with ways to create different soundscape. I lack verb right now which I'm not sure if I miss or not because my Moog delay creates such ambience.it's interesting using the LFO on the Moog plus wacky modulation on the mobius . good times.

Hell yes. Id say before tossing the nut, try to polish the slots and lube them with vaseline or nut sauce and you might not have to deal with carving new slots in a new nut. Im starting to consider getting something like this HARD now. saw one in a pawn shop and been gassin ever since. Cuz I Totally need another project right now hahaha


oh yeah, who makes this BTW? I dont see a maker mark on it. and whats the scale length?

Theres some cool ones on ebay too, dean has a few decent looking models for about 600. a few crazy things for super cheap too, DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE AGAIN.

I posted this over in the normal gear forum but I figured I would put it here too.




I updated my pedal board. I still have a fe changes planned for it but it is pretty much in the state I want it for now. I changed the dirt and I now have a madbean ocd that I built and a modified pharaoh that I built so it is always on the high setting and it has leds in place of the germanium diodes. I also added in an echo shifter that my gf gave me as a present and an orbital modulator to cover my phaser and chorus needs. It is a pretty cool pedal and I would say grab it if you don't want to spend the high dollars for the mobius.

I plan on replacing the trem which something else and will probably replace the compressor too, maybe with an engineer's thumb. Otherwise I am pretty happy with what I have. Thanks to black arts for the design of the pharaoh, it really sounds great.

I played a dean boca recently while I was killing time at GC. Total piece of shit. I really hated the neck and it just felt dead. Sad really< I have an older dean doubleneck that is the sex, the new stuff just seems really halfassed. that lp looks sweet though!

the 12 I just got was made by.... Some chinese dude? I first saw the model on one of those chinese direct sale sites, couldnt order it from Wa state due to some tax issue, then found this one on ebay for less than direct from china. Took the gamble and it seems to be working out.

My main guitar right now is a chinese knock off so I feel you on taking the gamble. I wasn't able to try the guitar before I bought it off of ebay but I took the risk because I wanted a seven string and I like the semi hollow bodies. But after a few upgrades it has turned into an awesome guitar that plays really well. I guess a lot of guitars are being made in the chinese or korean or indonesian factories now that they are geting to a good quality as long as they get good materials. I mean, american factories turn out shit too so I don't worry too much about where my stuff come from, just whether it feels good to use.

Maybe I'm the only one but as a general rule I hate chorus on guitar and even more on bass. If I had a time machine, just before buying a wall of Model T's and just after killing Hitler I'd go back to hide the chorus pedal from Alex Lifeson and I'd rip it out of Jaco Pastorius's amps.

ok...so on chorus...have you tried the Zakk Wylde Chorus...i have to say its one of the best chorus pedals i have ever played...and i think used they would go for the same price as the EHX stuff.

On a different note...I had a thought...granted not a great one but, here goes. Most people (including me) order their pedal board with dirt first and then modulation and delay...but if you think back to the old days when there was no effects look in amps and guitarists used their amp distortion or even boosted it with Fuzz or treble boosters etc, they always had their other effect going into the front of the amp, i.e. before dirt right?

so, why is it that when we organise a pedal board to go into the front of a clean amp we put dirt first? has anyone tried it the opposite way?

Good point. Let us know how it works out. You have me curious too, but I dont really want to tear apart my board right now. Lazy I guess

DONT DO IT! I did it quickly tonight just to hear it, my guitar sounded like a fart!

I guess there are technical reasons why it doesn't work, and now i guess i believe in the Gods and prophets who passed down the commandments of the pedalboard.

It differs depending on the gear used and the amount of dirt/other effects, but set just right modulation and delay can sound really nice pre dirt.
I love running a short delay with low regen and medium mix into a fuzz (especially something gated ).
& something really resonant like a phaser or flanger can kinda "squash" the sound in a cool way.

Yeah thats the bottom line. I'd much rather buy american from a rah rah go country standpoint, but nobody is making what I am after, so it kinda forces my hand. I may try getting in touch with egc again down the road but I got no response when I contacted them about it before.
If I can get a decently built guitar that can be made awesome with a few changes, I'm all about it. The price works for me too, more money for amps!

Isn't all of his stuff just other MXR pedals in a new enclosure with his name on it? I haven't tried it but I have heard that they sound nice. Holy shit, I just remembered that my nephew gave me my old Fender Starcaster chorus back about a year ago. It is in my closet somewhere. I'll have to dig it out and mess with it.

So tonight is my last show with Drop Electric, after tonight I will no longer be a part of the band.

For those of you not in the know the band has rapidly taken off after hiring on a manager, signing a release deal with Lefse records, as well as forming an LLC. What they would have required out of me dedication wise would have left me without the time, money and energy needed to raise my family. With the birth of my daughter imminent I felt it necessary to ammicably walk away and allow them to find someone new to fill my shoes so they can follow their dreams and path to success. It's a sad day but it also opens up many more opportunities for me, I'll now have more time to spend with my daughter when she's born and leave me with more energy to spend with my step kids especially since the oldest starts kindergarden this September. I also will now have time to start up a new project that is all ready in the works that will hopefully be the best thing I've done yet, even though we're not going to start jamming till january the drummer and fellow multi-musician who I'll be working with is all about it and all ready starting to get ideas for our visual media

Today is the end of an era for me, but the first steps into a new one.

Totally understand your reasoning. 10 days straight of touring and I was so ready to get back home and see my wife and kid. Hope the show went well and I can't wait to hear your new stuff.

I do prefer phaser to chorus in general, but I still fucking love chorus. Go for it, mate. I'll have your hunky back.

I can't stand cheesy 80's chorus tones but there are some cases where it really works and fits nicely in the mix. Its definitely something I wouldn't wanna overuse though. Same thing goes for phaser.

I got the zombie cosmichorus and honestly not worth the cash. IT has like 2 useable sounds then a bunch or warbly crap that makes you sound shitty and out of tune. the "normal" chorus tones arent even really that great. Kinda kicking myself for buying one new.

Really? I have a v2, so it's less versatile, but I have found all sorts of chorus and flangey sounds that I dig in there. I have always liked chorus and flanger though, so I was pretty much guaranteed to like it. The good news is that you won't have trouble flipping it if you ultimately decide it's not for you

Sucks you feel the need to leave the band, but probably the best choice. How is your daughter coming along? What's the due date again? We are due 9/21 - maybe they will be born the same day and be weird little kindred spirits
