wife bought me an sl-x for v day so now I has two I spent all afternoon today hammering my ears, tube swappin, cab swappin, guitar swappin. it ruled.



heres my list of things I learned (copy pasta'd from another forum I post on)

well ive spent all day today tube rollin tryin out all my cabs with them and I have come to a few conclusions.

1. I hate the pickup in my es335 studio (dirtyfingers+) its got such a shitty brittle top end with no girth to it, yuck. . . a bareknuckle alnico warpig is lookin really fucking good right now.

2. whatever is in my es135 makes the sl-x fucking rape assholes. super thick and girthy, while maintaining a great amount of clarity.

3. the sl-x isn't really responsive to pre-amp tube swaps. in my 800 or superbass its night and day difference in those its kinda like. . . ehh save your good tubes for other amps that respond better. with that said the JJs that are in both of them are prolly gonna stay in there.

4. jcm 800s should always be paired with 4 greenbacks and 4 vintage 30s, if you disagree your fucking wrong.

5. jcm 800s should always have 2 amprex 12ax7s and 1 12at7, deal with it.

6. greenbacks love to be put into gflex 4x12s. bast. sounding cab. evar.

7. sl-xs need VOLUME to get rid of an annoying top end fizz they have (no matter the pre amp tubes), after 5 on the master its amazeballs.

8. the transformers are the same goddamn size as the 800s, and im pretty sure the slx weights a pound or 2 more.

9. they don't really take to the two boosts I have (dod 250 and way huge overdrive) I actually prefer them not to be boosted. way more clarity, this amp lets you know how bad you need to work on your triplets. >>>guilty as fuck<<<

10. they nail a lot of great tones. A tuned les paul was churnin out mastodon tones easy peasy.

overall im pretty fucking jazzed with them. do I need two? no. but who fucking cares they rule!

next amp: JMP 2203.

I love my g-flex 2x12, never tried a 4x12 but imagine its quite awesome

those cabs are probably the best built cabs ive have my hands on. too bad theyre fuck ugly.

I have an epiphone les paul 100. Would switching the pickups make it a better doom machine? Or is it not worth it? And if so what decent affordable pickups should I get?

also, gentlemen It bums me out but the sl-x the wife bought me is going back to gc and getting returned. bad caps. theyre gonna BLOW, soooOOOooo if youre checkin out sl-xs DONT DONT DONT buy the one from Scottsdale az. these guys are gonna hate me, that's the same GC where I blew up the sound city 150 and it nearly killed me. and im sure they will return it and put it RIGHT back into stock. so ya. don't do it.

also my other SL-X, or15 and my ampeg gvt5H are going on sale on craigslist. . . . I have a chance to buy a unicorn amp and im gonna try for it. . .

Man, I think changing gear that often and that fast would give me cancer! Of course I don't have the same amount of stuff as a lot of guys on here, but at the same time I don't know how I could feasibly use all of the things I kind of want anyway. The idea of a dual amp rig is becoming increasingly common, as is the backup guitar I want for the band that I don't play in.

A lot of stock pickups are bland medium output ceramic pickups. I had a set that came on my Agile that didn't sound terrible, but I could hear how muddy they were whenever I tried to play clean or roll the guitar volume off.

I don't know if there's really a bad pickup, but knowing how different materials and stuff affects sound can help you find what you want. A couple of general rules of thumb when looking for pickups (and please correct me if I'm wrong/your experiences differ, etc, etc):

- Alnico pickups are warmer and rounder with a more bell like clean tone. They occasionally have a loose low end when playing with heavy gain. Generally a little "fatter" and fuller sounding. "Classic" les paul sounds are Alnicos.
- Ceramic pickups are tighter sounding, with less low end. They sound "drier" to my ear, and their definition is generally valued when you aren't focused on texture or fuzz. Granted, I like my dimarzio pickups (which are ceramics).
- DC Resistance (amount of pickup winding?) affects both the overall output of the pickup and the amount of low end. This is arguably one of the more important details, as I've bought and returned several pickups that sounded like what I wanted, but had such a high resistance that there was either too much low end, or not enough high end. PAF pickups are generally between 7 and 10 kOhm. One of the pickups in question, Dimarzio's Tone Zone, has a resistance of about 17k. I thought it was dark and muddy (but this was also using a new amp, before I decided that EQ =/= everything at 10).

I guess the best question to start with is, "do I want/need crisp cleans?" Because if you don't, then you could use just about anything.

I think any guitar can be good for teh doomz toanz, again, some are better, but it's all a matter of degrees and fine tuning.

With an Epi or any other less expensive guitar, they get assembled and shoved out the door, then onto a shelf at GC or wherever. Unless a bored employee who knows what they are doing sets it up, chances are things are just kinda in there, and not optimal.
To get the most out of pickups, try this. Get your amp set to your favorite sounding clean setting. no pedals, no effects, just strings>pickups>amp>speaker. Now raise and lower the pickup (one at a time) until it sounds its best, the fullest loudest sound that you can get out of it. do the same with the other pup. Now engage them both, to bassy? lower the neck pup a bit. to much treble? lower the bridge one. When you get it close to "best" sounding, fine adjustments work better. A single turn can have quite an impact. if you've allready done this or you do it and still are not happy with the sound, There are bunches of great pickups out there you can try. I'd keep the stock ones in a drawer so if/when you sell the guitar you can put it back to stock. I'm a fan of Lace alumitones, I'm sure others will pipe in with their favorites.
