SS are SUPER bright, their also usually rougher on your fingers, a fresh set and you instantly sound like the bassist in Megadeth basically.
Nickel strings are smoother, and not as bright as SS, I prefer them, but flatwounds beat them both IMO

I'd be all about Flats if I still had my Jazz Bass. The strings currently on my bass are nickels and I was pleased with them, but they are about a year old now and are losing some life. I like bright,...I don't like Clank Clank Clank Dave Elfman tone though.

Not teh ghey, just a man of exquisite tastes!
As far as strings go, I used to be very anti-SS, however the Big Al 4H is kind of dark sounding, so to balance that I strung it up with DR SS Low Riders and I'm very happy with the tone. The Big Al SSS isn't nearly as dark sounding and is strung up with the Nickel Low Riders. Other than the Nickels feeling a little smoother they have near identical tension, so it makes it easy to switch between the basses.

I bought a set of DR Lo-Riders one time. Seriously, played one show with them and they were completely dead and lacking of harmonics. It may be due to an incredible amount of sweat, but, still, one show. I use SS Blue Steels now. Or Rotosound 66s.

My favourite strings are 6 month old DR Sunbeams.
I really should just switch to flats.

I'm kinda tempted to try flats sometime, but I love my clank clank clank so much. Maybe I'll get a project bass, and make that be my dedicated flats-bass.
