Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Oh for sure!
This one had been recapped and retubed before I bought it.
Maybe it was a lemon, no idea. It sounded very bad and had issues.

How much do Hylight DR103's go for in Ireland?
in my area, Sound City stuff goes for in and around the same price as a Hylight DR103 because they're not easy to find here.
I don't really feel like taking chances with old amps I'm not to sure on personally... I had a 71' Sunn 1200s and it constantly had problems and overall it sounded like shit (putting it lightly...)
I was super bummed about it.
Original Hiwatts in good condition go for around €1200. I've seen some as high as €1700, though. Sound City is not uncommon in the UK so they don't go for much more than €700-800.
I don't think I'd pay over €700 for a vintage amp unless I know for sure it's got plenty of life left in it.
new05002 wrote:old amps usually need work, most of the time people have no idea you are supposed to recap them and they think that if they are all original (like original caps) that is worth more. So if the amp has never been recapped, i generally would consider them worth a little less since you are going to have to turn around and put in all new electrolytic caps ect
Upon researching the Simms-Watts 100, I found a thread where I guy was given one by his friend. He didn't want to change the capacitors, but someone of experience persuaded him to do so. I'm not sure whether he did in the end, but the encouragement was sound and would not devalue the amp. In fact, it would add value. It's like an original 50's Fender Telecaster. Few people want a Telecaster that has zero frets left, so they get them professionally re-fretted. It adds to the value if it's playable. There is no heritage value when it comes to frets. They're just pieces of metal that wear away easily upon heavy usage. It serves no purpose to keep the original ones unless they're still in good shape.

I think you def had a lemon, or the guy who workied on it messed something up. My 1200s is kickass and has taken the place of the 200 Watt soundtronics. Mad loud and just awesome tone and NO ICEPICKY SHIT. I really love it.

I paid £250 for an SC120 when I was 17. Wish I'd kept it.

Iommic Pope wrote:Ok, I just skim read , and you guys have pretty much turned me off the 900. Not a bad thing, I guess I'm just kind of trying to reconcile the fact that I'm never going to be able to afford a SLO. But I'm probably not gonna be satisfied with anything else.
New dilemma, do I want aussy's oath for sale over in BST or do I want an ape blaster?
kinda want both, but right now, wallet says "pick one". I've played my mates badascan and enjoyed....so its a tough call.
I want to say more but I'm on my phone and typing sucks. Ill drop in laters.
you probably do want both. the revelation sb i played was fucking awesome. i liked it dimed to, like the oath would be, but i found that the knobs were pretty useful too. i'm not sure it would sound it's best with every amp at full tilt. in that regard, i would probably get a revelation over an oath. with the right amp though, an oath would be all you need.
the ape blaster though, no hesitation. i am one of the very lucky few who actually knows at this point how fucking awesome this pedal is. if you do not want full on crushing thick high gain fuzz, do not get this pedal. however if you do, you won't be happier. a problem that i've had with lot of fuzz pedals is that higher notes or chords, leads and more complex chords will get kind of drowned by the wall of fuzz from lower notes. like you set it so you hit that open low chord and it just sounds awesome and rattles the bowels, but when you work further up the neck or start using those black metal chords, it's quieter and kind of muddy. i don't know how darren did it, but the ape blaster completely did away with this dilemma for me. somehow it has such thick rich gain, but also is incredibly articulate. everything comes through very balanced. and it cuts in a band mix incredibly well. stacks really well with my badascan too.

All this Ape Blaster positivity, it makes me smile. I'm DEFINITELY buying one.

Said it way better than I did. Totally agree and the AB so perfect for what I do. Ťhe intro to our fist songs starts with a low c, the some high pitched harmonics which could get obscured by the low note ringing out. With the AB on, I can crush that low note and you still hear the high part clear as day. Sofa King good!

i have one of the protos, its nice. For me id trim down the input bass a little more than the stock setting or just make the bass cut switch not so strong. Maybe have darren mess with it sometime.
