I always say "Conan The Barbarian." But since it can't truly be called a "Marvel movie" because it was based on a series of books, I always get in arguments about it.

But if Marvel hadn't kept Conan in the minds of kids since 1970 (and the real source material for the 1982 film, built from the Savage Sword of Conan series created in 1974), Dino De Laurentiis would never have spent money on it.

I bought all of the paperback compilations and even the Sprague De Camp stuff when I was in my early 20s.. have them all somewhere. I also got all the Dark horse graphic novels they did a while back. Cary Nord best Conan art ever.. with or course the exception of the great Frankie Frazetta on the covers of all the classics.

What’s funny is I don’t like sword and sorcery literature but Robert really expressed the violence of the ages he wrote about. There is a great Chicago pizza joint in Austin called Conan’s that has its walls covered with Frazetta art. It was est. in the late 70s, so around the time the revival happened with the de camp books. I think the Conan boom in the 70s was one of those niche micro-phenomena that you would have had to been there to really appreciate, who knows ...

Wow, I had totally forgot about Savage Sword of Conan. Those comics were huge for me in my teenage years.
