If you really wanna do sampling live then octatrack is the best without contest. Quantized sample length with recording trigs makes everything fit exactly like you want it. Completely seamless. And MK 1 is found pretty cheap nowadays

Seriously, it defeats the entire purpose. A breakdown of the fundamental.

If this is like a 10,000% dealbreaker then it is what it is.

I would share something I made with just the MS but it's waiting on vidret to finish his contribution to the comp.
It's totally a 100000% a dealbreaker.

And I'm on it, goddamnit. on sunday. sunday sunday.

samplers that can't sample direct shouldn't be allowed to be called samplers.
Where's yer sample track bro we're all waiting on you.

It pretty much summed up the thread imo.

It is entirely a product of the TE philosophy I think, trying to make a more affordable version of the OP-1. In many ways it is really that. But yeah, it is not a better version of the OP-1. I would be surprised if TE released a synth that is gonna be more expensive that the op1 tbh
Both of these seem pretty accurate. I think the OP-Z has a fairly different workflow from the OP-1; where the OP-Z is entirely focused around sequencers, and the OP-1 is entirely focused around tape? I don’t know if it was supposed to be “better”, they fill slightly different parts of the same niche. The design philosophies seem slightly different. The OP-Z seems to put more focus on performing live with its different global effects as well as its lighting and video synthesis capabilities, and the OP-1 seems like it aims to recreate the four track recording process in a fun and easy to navigate package?

I think my “steep learning curve” expectation was built on the review video from Sonic State. Their presentation was really confusing and made it hard to understand how it worked. Every other video on it I’ve seen has been a lot easier to understand.

coldbrightsunlight wrote:Looks like the OP-Z is functional but... limited without the app?

Not that I've looked into it much.
From the reviews I’ve seen so far, it seems like it actually is a lot nicer to use if you don’t connect it to the app? Like, it’s helpful when you’re first learning it, but once you have the button combos memorized and remember how to navigate the different settings pages the app’s not really necessary anymore? Some things like the DMX lighting and the Unity programming would definitely require the app, but I really doubt I’ll ever touch those features?

I figured out where the Teenage Engineering dealer is here. So, I’m going to head there next weekend and hopefully try out both the OP-1/OP-Z
So I have an OP-Z and I can chime in! That's totally true and once you know what the LEDs are saying it's super super easy to get a track going, faster than anything else I have actually. Sample importing is super easy with the already existing OP-1 tools, but recording to the unit itself requires one hand, making some sample recording techniques harder than others.

The OP-Z however has the best sequencer I've seen, you can have so many layers of conditional parameters, and then you have a master track sequencer that reads the key of everything you have playing and you can transpose it, making you entire sequence full on chord progression.

Now back to the main topic, I know you said standalone...but iPad.

Well I saw the OP-Z in person and couldn’t resist (thank you stimulus money). I’ll report back once I’ve learned how to use its basic functions.

update: so far the biggest downside is how small it is, and I wish the button combo placement made it nicer to use as a handheld.

Not to make this my iOS thread 2.0 but here are three sampler apps that would fit the bill depending on your flavor.

Samplr: basically OP-1 like feel but with a 6 track sampler, this is a lot of fun and ingeniously designed.

Koala: super simple mpc style sampling, just tap an empty spot on the grid and record something. Also available on Android

Beatmaker 3: really this straddles the line between MPC sampler and full daw. But it's also the deepest sampler available on the iPad.
(This is the first video I found that wasn't like 40 minutes. It's a deep app lol.)

Also, all of these run on the current gen low end iPad, which will run you a lot less than the stuff priced out here.

Ended up spending last night researching known issues & build quality with the OP-Z after finding a For Parts/malfunctioning unit listing for cheap (a modern microscopic horror story), but also ended up bummed out by all the ire TE has gained in the OP-1/Z interim, as well as what feels like their overall insouciance to responding to emails/troubleshooting (most malfunctioning units are straight up swapped out per your retailer, so buying used seems like a gamble). So instead of buying anything, I just made a poster for this thread instead
