dude, i agree with nurses but the teacher thing is a bit different. if we make teaching jobs high paying then more people will go after them solely because of the money and benefits. (e.g. over here university teachers get paid quite well, and so many of them are people who just need money because they can't support themselves in their chosen field, and have very low teaching ability despite their knowledge)
teachers are incredibly important, but in quality, not quantity. people who are passionate about teaching and actually make a difference to people's lives don't care that much about the pay, they get enough to live on and they generally get a plenty of paid leave and usually stable jobs so it's enough. we need to find ways to reward these people but you can't just pump up the earnings to make the job more attractive. I think this applies to some other areas which are female-dominated as well. jobs where passion is the most important attribute; jobs where you're shaping people's lives.
source: my mother is a primary teacher/librarian who does a lot of hard work in trying to improve schools and the attitudes of other teachers where she works so i hear a lot about this second hand.
