Because I'm an imbecile, I didn't realize at the time that chisel tips are terrible for soldering pickups and the like, but somehow I managed to get done what I needed to. Anyway my neck pickup connection came loose on one of my guitars and I want to resolder it, but I'd like to buy a replacement tip for the iron first. I contacted Weller to ask which tip would be compatible, but they never wrote back. Thanks assholes. Does anyone know what tip to get for it, and where to get it? They probably don't make this model anymore; do I have to get a whole new iron?
Hakko customer service is fantastic. Nice irons, too, tons of tips, so if you do end up buying a new iron . . .
Never had a Weller, though, couldn't tell you about the tips.

I need a gas edger for my lawn. Finally got sick of doing it with a hand edger and scissors (my back ain't liking it anymore). Would just buy the McLane, but it is banned in CA...and CubCadet got rid of their mail order and their cheaper one. I don't have much of a lawn, but I figure I can just spend a bit more a get something better than the cheap troy bilt (only one I can find)...any recommendations?
I can't stand weed eaters BTW...have one and can't stand it (would rather use sheers and do) and I don't really have any place to plug in outdoors due to the way my lot is shaped (without running 300' of ext cord, so electric is out)...plus the gas double blade ones just make a nice cut. Always had vintage king-o-lawn or mclane ones...but they are going for good money these days (LA sucks)...
Maybe I will just scour ebay for one with free shipping? I can repair them (used to rebuild the clutches on King-o-lawn front throws with my dad because there were no parts)

So, you guys're still allowed to water your lawn?

I have the grass that wont die! haha...we still water, but I think it is technically just enough for grass to not become a fire hazard. Plus the rain is coming...
I swear though...haven't used my sprinklers in weeks and this grass is still growing fast enough. Buganvilia and honeysuckles are like weeds too. Damn things are growning faster. Some of the sage is surviving...some not. The Rock Purslane is doing ok...this sucks to invest so much into a lawn and then have to let it kind of die. It really used to look awesome, but the water is so expensive (but I never overwatered and replaced everything with "drought friendly/tolerant" which is funny...they just look like crap without water and only look good during wet seasons...which means they are going to look like crap for eternity

)

If it's any consolation, I think lawns are a waste of resources. I wonder if there's something better you could replace all your landscaping with?

That desert sandscape that people are putting is the alternative here, but I think it looks pretty bad. My street is all lined with trees and lawns and actually looks nice. The lawns are small, but I've got to keep the block looking nice (well, at least so that people don't start thinking it is a trash can...which is a problem in LA...more bushes and hiding spots=more trash). I enjoy the yardwork though..just don't got the back for sheer cutting everything anymore.
But we are in the lowest tier for water useage...but part of our "waste/sanitation" bill is based on water use...kinda sucks. Everything else looks good and is low water use...i dunno. Nice lawns look nice, stupid hard pack sand around a sago palm looks kinda lame. Taking out parts of grass though soon (just to make it look nice and take away what you cant see).

True, you also don't want your neighbors getting mad at you and claiming that you're bringing down their property value.

Yea, cub cadet makes awesome stuff but they discontinued free shipping and the edger I wanted...
Looks awesome though UG...I could imagine raking gets tiring too.
Man, property value has skyrocketed here too...like almost double in 5 years. Used to have the nicest lawn before the drought. Sad...

yeah i'm hella lazy when it comes to yard work and just dont enjoy it at all. only gonna use the thing probably twice a year but it was worth the 300$ i paid, they were having a 30% off sale, they had a fender cyclone with the american jag pups for 399$ that was excluded from the sale or I would have a new guitar too

yeah, me too. I live on a acre filled with trees and ignored doing much for the first couple years.. this year I had no choice…
Which leeds to this...

New mattocks suck.. pick axes suck cuz I'm too tall… so I got this OLD thing… got a handle for it but… this thing looks like someone at on point reshaped the eye… so I have a good hour + of fitting… going to have to wedge it too…

I hear ya on new mattocks. I bought one in a pinch (same reasons you had...too tall, etc) and I can trench faster with one....It sucked but I got the first job done....then went to use mine to pry up some old subfloor and the damn thing bent...on freaking plywood.

Junk....pretty much stay away from big box store tools after that (this was years ago...) and mostly have just old hand tools now though. Except my hammer...that one is special but the steel is kinda soft (but I still like it).

Have you tried the ancient technique we call "Bake and Rake?"
