So, when we out people as hipsters we are trying to out them for presenting a fake image to the world because they are too boring to create a personality of their own. So yeah, people who have some notion of what is "cool" but are insecure about themselves, will likely arbitrarily use the term hipster to slag off anyone trying to do something "cool," because there's no way anyone's "cool"er than you. Nope. I'm beyond labels anymore. Beyond 1984, beyond 2001, beyond life, beyond death: Zardoz. (man I'm in a weird mood right now

In a now-type view point this makes sense, but what the term was used for for a very long time before the current "trend" was someone that is "part" of the scene but actually doesn't do anything other then be part of the scene [or at BEST write about the scene], which is why a lot of us that are 30+ think of the term as a description for a great irritant.

Yeah, I neglected to mention that hipster is the new poseur.
I think hipsters used to be counterculture.
Now hipsters are pop culture, and hacky. Common caricatures whoring for attention.

LOOK AT ME! ITS ME ITS ME ITS ME!
The rise of the blog and social media bears much of the blame, for providing every wannabe with a platform they can use to devote a shrine to themselves.
So a generation of self-obsessive trendwhores, who have been brainwashed into thinking they're unique snowflakes, redirect attention to themselves by latching onto arbitrary, superficial meme and wearing it like a costume. Lame.

Would it be hipster to wear a Raiden hat? With overalls and a long-stemmed opium pipe?
