I think a lot of people overestimate the popularity of DOOM/Stoner etc. Here on ILF it seems very prevelant especially because we Doom Room guys came over from HC en masse when that place started to go down hill. we're a vocal and prolific bunch of guys and we like it here because of the overall vibe of ILF which is very positive and encourages no bullshit conversation and creativity. Anybody who wants to jump on the "DOOM wagon" thinking they will profit from it are sadly mistaken. I try to go to as many of the touring bands shows as I can make it to and talk with them whenever possible and most of the bigger acts I've talked to are struggling just to keep it going day to day. There be no treasure here.
If you get off the internet and go to shows outside of the "doom" community I think you'll find most people have no idea about it. It amazes me how many musicians who are into heavy shit have never heard of Sleep. I can see how it would be annoying if you are not into it to see all of us going nuts over Doom shit here all the time, but there's a lot of folks that dont do the heavies here and I might not enjoy thier music and so what? I dont dig most of the Noise stuff but I still like talking gear with those guys. Who cares who plays what.
Now If glam rock comes back I'll eat those words lol. Cherrie pie anyone? :barf:

Edit: if you go to touring shows, regardless of genre, buy a shirt or something from the bands. At the royal thunder show I bought a shirt and they were really excited about it, as I was walking away I overheard "now we can eat!"

the whole psychedelic aesthetic bullshit dealy has made me come to the conclusion that culture kills creativity. it becomes a passive set of rules for how-it-should-be, and whether people want to or not, it just churns out clones. i mean, case in point the whole CBGBs scene. when it started, you couldn't tell who was punk from who was post punk from proto punk. but once it got a flag to stand under, everyone followed it, and you never had new punk stuff until you had someone who said "fuck what that flag stands for. thats not punk" and made their own flag.

but with the whole damn psychedelia scene, everyone is too hopped up on bullshit noncommittal liberal hippie morals to say "its bullshit that every one of you fuckers rips on the same set of bands, or draws like alex grey or some bullshit pseudo-hyperrealist/symbolist with the same goddamn visual vocabulary as everyone else"

psychedelic, like ambient, isn't a real genre. its a word used to describe music. and yes, theres a difference. its like aquatic, or aerial. you don't classify whales and fish and jellies in the same order just because they're all underwater.

Psychedelic music is what made you realize culture kills creativity?

two reactions:

Cynically--When you grow up through an education system that rewards being an also-ran, shouldn't you expect that kind of behavior to continue post-education?

Nonplussed--Why worry about what other bands are doing? They're not your band.

Psychedelic aesthetics have been completely stereotypical and generic for a couple of decades now. 70's font and a phaser = instant psychedelic classification. It's too easy, and it can be applied to everything from super heavy shit to techno, pop, acoustic, whatever. I love some good stony trip jams to be sure, but tie dye and patchouli can fuck off. Yes I like Ozric Tentacles, but that doesn't mean I should have dreadlocks and a man-purse. Psychedelics aren't just for hippies, and I hate how cliched the whole subculture has become.

Maybe we can be buds....maybe

there is more to doom then all that crappy stoner/monstercar/angst stuff though, Drone/doom and Funeral Doom can really be nice stuff to chill out to :trippy: But anything that starts saying it is a boxed style is pretty limited which you would think would be stifling :idk:

I mean... yeah, sure I can dig a good stoner band, but since the're thirteen in a dozen of those nowadays, only if they're putting up a good show, or if they can drop in a song something I wasn't expecting, something that actually gets my attention.

Nice groovin' pot smokin' low tuned rock 'n' roll is good for parties and having good time but that can be such ...good times music. Like... at worst it makes me feel it's just bearded and pot smoking version of fucking happyhappyjoyjoy bubblegum pop music. :picard: There, I said it. Just admit, it's pretty far from the more extreme apocapyptic, mourning, claustrophobic, psyched, bleak and absolutely suicidal stuff. You know. the doom metal that can get every bit as grim and extreme as black metal but without all that energy to blast and shred.

:whateva: :idk: Not that I'd really care much anymore about orthodoxy of any genre. I'm listening to Miles Davis as I write this. :)

before anyone shits on them, I'd like to remind everyone that Fu Manchu is beyond reproach forever and always.

but this thread got me thinking - mainly the "psychedelic" comment

were it not for the "common listener", meaning the laymen with extremely narrow and shallow taste, who need boxes and labels, we could have a much better system of describing music mainly (or maybe even solely) by adjectives

doomy is an adjective and it describes a lot of bands very well... it even describes some non-doom bands better than some bands who are considered doom

side effects include: need to think (wow, too much to ask), clearer communication, a lot of space for discussion

i agree with this post so much. i like some of the really well done stoner stuff, but shit there's so many bands doing it. i've grown pretty bored of it. i really am more into the more depressive, bleak suicidal stuff. it is called "doom" metal after all. nothing that grim about riding a magic carpet through a forest of weed.

I'm stupider for having read as much of this thread as I have (which was maybe 2 of the pages). I can relate in that I make hyper-judgmental statements all the time too because I'm also insecure with my own tastes as well as my position in life, particularly in music. This band or genre is better than that sounds a bit too much like sports and sports and art are not the peanut butter cup I'm personally interested in. If you think what somebody else likes is trite because it's been done before while what you like is new and fresh then you're just not very well informed about music and it was probably being made before you grandma was born. I understand that doom is an overused phrase and the doom folks (myself included) kind of invaded this place but at least they keep to themselves unlike the god-squad on the gear page...which cabinet casters are the best for Praise and Worship? I'm a little sick of electronic music being everywhere. Who listens to techno dance music while driving? In the 80's and 90's you only heard that stuff in clubs or during Pride parades. Now people blast while in the drive through at In-N-Out...thankfully I've yet to see glow sticks while driving. Even then, the problem I have with it (besides thinking it's terrible music) is that I can't control my exposure to it. I can only crank Ira Glass so loud in my car before my sinuses explode from the resonate frequencies of his voice.

Well that was certainly... something.

But this says doom in the title so it's gotta be related to the subject :p :p :p

Moral of the story comes from seeing just how many people have commented about this not being what they supposed to come up because they didn't take a a few to check the related videos. Suckers!
