ya mc5 and stooges both legendary detroit bands

MC5 is literally Motor City Five.

Also, lots of great artists came from Michigan. Stevie Wonder is from Saginaw, Jack White came from Detroit, as did Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent. Hell, Motown was born and made great in Detroit. Sadly, ICP and Madonna are also from here, so yeah...

the 90s were pretty bad for michigan music. the only 2 bands i can remember out of MI were sponge (detroit 1 hit wonder) and the verve pipe (kalamazoo 1.5 hit wonder)

i know a dude who had a band in southwest MI. he was real tight with the verve pipe dudes back in the mid 90s when they were on 120 minutes and shit like that. the dudes band ended up getting signed to atlantic and unceremoniously dropped after one record. long time ago. it was a big lesson to the young ass kid i was at the time that "getting signed" is not a solution to life's problems. the dude ended up going back to work for the same music store he worked for before his band got signed to atlantic.

grand funk railroad also from MI - flint specifically

That is really funny that you mention the Verve Pipe, since the bassist actually lives in bay city and I see him at the bar I go to all the time. He's a pretty cool dude.

last year i saw the verve pipe on a public access show that is taped in lansing (iirc). they do a lot of southern michigan bands. i guess they broke up and got back together to pay their mortgages or whatever. maybe they never broke up. fuck if i know.

anyway the new lead guitarist the verve pipe are using is a dude from a band called the rockit king from grand rapids. pretty much 80s hard rock band. they broke up.

guy i went to high school with in the middle of fucking nowhere up north came up with the name the rockit king back in 2000. we were gonna start a band back then and thats the name he wanted to use. (i wasnt really feeling it) he didnt start the band til a few years later. he is a pretty amazing lead guitarist. dude can fucking play. they were doing pretty good in GR for a while until whatever happened. i dont know. then the other guitar player (the one i dont know) joined up with the verve pipe after TRK broke up.

spent quite a bit of time in bay city last year for medical shit. it's a small world after all.

if you ever find yourself in downtown detroit, you MUST go to lafayette coney island. it's THAT place that all the locals go to, because they know what the fuck is up.

a little background...
it's been there 100 years, but has been owned by Yemenis for a long long time. Really cool fuckin dudes.

Right next door to Lafayette CI is American Coney Island. and get this...the Yemeni fellow who owns Lafayette CI...his brother owns American CI. and it is a full on, dirty ass rivalry. It seems like real detroiters know that lafayette is where it's at.

I heard a story from back in the 70s...a brother who went to high school downtown would go into Layfayette every day after school.

One day he went into American Coney Island instead.

The next time he went into Lafayette Coney Island, the owner of Lafayette banned him for a year.

True story.

bankruptcy is the best course, recognizing the inevitable fact that there's no tax base to rape to pay for shit when you turn your city into a Third World country.

Anyone watch Detropia? Pretty interesting documentary about what is going on over there. Lots of wicked mullet perms as well - ala Howie Mandell in the 90s.

I always feel guilty watching that show...it's like watching a Letterman-esque bit called Stupid Human Tricks.

I actually didn't find it to be all that terrible, was decently informative and entertaining.
Plus...it might make me a bad person, but I couldn't help but laugh at some of the old black dudes they interviewed...

i lived in detroit for 6 months or so and have to say that it is a really interesting place. i honestly didn't go out very much so i missed out on really experiencing as much of the city as i should have, but it is a very sad place in general. there is a lot of positivity among newer residents who are "homesteading" there, but otherwise fuck it's depressing.

uuuh i think maybe 8 years ago? maybe 9? doesn't seem like that long ago sometimes.
i was living in mexicantown, right near the bridge to canada. it was decent, bust my ex and i still had our car windows smashed 4 times - 3 were in the winter so most likely someone just trying to keep warm, the other time probably just a crackhead looking for change. there were parts of the city i really liked (SLOW'S BBQ YES) and ann arbor is very nice as well, but on a whole i really just didn't jive with the place... oh well

i did go to school with her. we had some classes together, she was good friends with a few of my good friends and she even sat in on vocals at a show with one of my old bands - think i have a minidisc of it somewhere, though to be perfectly honest it wasn't very good. nothing against her, we were a tortoise-ish band that did 90% improvisation at shows.
