Don't forget those chromatic steps. Ooh baby! It makes my spine tingle.
This thread has made me realize even more than before that I tend to play guitar like a bassist. Either that or I just scratch out barre chords in indeterminate 16th note patterns.

And if someone plays slap bass in my house I tell them to get out.
They get to stay if they surrender a case of beer and/or nugs and put down the bass.
I don't get offended by much, but slap bass is on the list.

What is up with the slap bass hate goin' on??? Everybody is going on about how bass is a rhythmic instrument yet then they start hatin' on the most percussive, groove-oriented style of bass around. If you think slap bass is about popping out quick, showy little riffs, you're not listening to the right stuff. Slap bass transcends the one-and-two-and monotony of generic rock music into the heavenly 16th-note world of wonder that is The Funk. It's something that pushes the music to an overall eurphoro-rhythmic consciousness, not something that necessarily forms the basis of the song. Just add fuzzy wah'd out guitar, tight yet driving drums, and some mad bouncing clav and you've got real music.
Y'all need to sit down and listen to Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins until your anuses bleed. Put down that Victor Wooten and Les Claypool. Those boys don't know what music is all about.

Not trying to diss Mr.'s Wooten and Claypool. I just think they aren't good examples of the fundamental rhythmic nature of slap bass and may lead people to think it's something that demands to be either loved despised. It's something that should gel with the groove and almost go unnoticed by the listener. Both of those dudes are great bassists however. Their playing just shouldn't be indicative of an entire style.

you DO realize that Les is pretty much the most inventive player in slap since Graham.
or are you going by lesson one of bootsy's funk academy? the lesson barely anyone reads past

Goodness! I'm not trying to say Les Claypool or anything for that matter is bad. I'm just saying that compared to more classic funk bassists he takes a much more forefront position in the overall mix of his music. That's completely appropriate considering Claypool tends to play in small 3-4 person combo whereas Graham is usually in a larger funk band setting. Two sides of the same coin. My point was that many people only see one of those sides and fail to recognize the flexibility of that style of playing.
We shouldn't be arguing with each other. We should be teaming up to defeat the onslaught of slap bass hatred.

I will tell you. It isn't hate of slap bass it is hate of a rude dude going over, picking up your bass and beating on it in what they think is slap bass. That and a lot of bassists seem to think that when their solo spot in a song/show comes up they will/must play a slap solo no matter the style of the band/song they are playing in and it is almost always the same solo no matter who plays it and it always sounds like something lifted off a instructional video.

For the most part yes, agree, there are a few exceptions but now days yeah... Wait! I'm not that old, it's been mostly shredding as long as I have been playing...

I'm not sure if this is how the rest of the people who are anti-slap feel, but personally I don't hate slap -- I hate the PT-PT-PT-PT-PT-PT-PT-THANG-THANG-PT-THANG-PT-PT-PT-THANG-PT-THANG-PT-THANGTHANGTHANGTHANGPTPTPTPTPTP 1 million BPM masturbation you hear people doing on bass in music stores. I think that's what they are talking about too. Maybe.
