When I was 13/14, I got the PIXIES live show DVD and Gouge Away doc that came with it. I learnt guitar by watching that DVD basically. I've got everything they recorded; purple tape, live at BBC, B sides, eeeeeeveryyyything.

   TJ, that head turned out seriously amazing, the front panel wood choices and the wicked green burst all plays so well to the design of the front and back panels. Well done good sir, well done.

I love them all :idk: As someone with a shit ton of recording experience, and mixing and mastering experience, I can truly appreciate good production. I may not like it as much Blessed Black Wings (which is my fav HoF album) but I can't see how increasing the production quality can reduce the quality of the music, unless its Kvlt Black Metal. I felt the guitar work and musicianship as a whole on Snakes was awesome.

Oh and since we're on it....

My fav death song with one of my fav drummers (Gene Hoglan)....

THanks man! Im glad you appreciate it, it feels good when someone digs your work. ALSO crystal mountain is MY FAVORITE TOOO
I make guitars and stuff, check it out at...

Pixies are great. As is Iommic Pope.

Too many pages to go back and multi quote, but to sum things up: Surrounded By Thieves is probably the ultimate "Billy Anderson Zero Budget" record. That, along with Variations on a Theme, need to be listened to VERY FUCKING LOUDLY or else they sound subpar. Blessed Black Wings is probably my favorite HoF album, production wise.

Snakes... doesn't sound like a band in a room together, making it unique in the HoF discography. It sounds like musicians laying down parts, instead of a band getting together and slaying faces. Too much instrument separation for my liking. Some of the songs are great, and they go over great live, but I'll always reach for Snakes last as an album to put on if I'm listening to High On Fire.

Yeah, but it's easy to forgive them for it because the drummer is a fucking beast.

CaptainBoxman wrote:Raw recordings are best recordings. This is one of the many reasons I love Dinosaur Jr., High on Fire, and even bands I'm sure you all hate like Neutral Milk Hotel and Pixies.

Stripped or low-fi recordings where there are few gimmicks and obvious clean ups are the best. What I like to hear is what Steve Albini referred to as "archiving" a band.

Agreed.

Also, I like all of those bands. A lot.

Missed Dino JR when they played 3 nights in a row in my area last year because of work.

They're coming back this fall. Stoked as fuck.

I'd be totally down with starting one of our songs that way.

 I dunno why but I lost my shit at that. It was hilarious. What is that from?
Also, Skip, I dig your attitude towards production. Obviously, shit should sound as awesome as possible (I love Soundgarden's Superunknown for its over-production), but obviously it ain't gonna suit everything out there. Horses for courses.

Dammit! I wish I had some cash dude, I'd take it. I've been pondering the whole OR/OD/OTR/Matamp GT thing as part of a dual rig for ages now and the more I listen to Conan, the more I want it. Don't suppose you could let me lay-by it off you? :p

Awe, thanks bud!
Also I agree with all of the above.
Man, there is some man-love coming back into the doom room.
And guess what Boxman....
ryan summit wrote:i love you boxman

you started it! Meat in the bear sandwich....and I love the Pixies as well. Saw them on that last Doolittle tour. Was rad. Frank Black didn't acknowledge the audience at all, which is a bit of dickish thing to do.

Apolgies for the epic-Conan-length post.
