I like both of the records, but it was a bit of a shock of a listening experience.

The setlist on the Death tours was pretty awesome. Title track is a treat live.

Also fuck yeah I love The Floyd. Reading through Saucerful of Secrets right now.

I dig Death too! They had a cool sound and a great group of musicians. Growing up in Florida, I was exposed to a friggin TON of death metal. Death, Morbid Angle, Obituary... oh yeah.

D.o.S. wrote:I mean, dude, I had to hunt for Dopesmoker when Tee Pee put it out. I was really into Kyuss and High on Fire--OM hadn't quite surfaced yet, so imagine my surprise when I finally found the fucker (on vinyl, no less) after researching the shit out of it [ via stonerrock and allmusic], learning all about this mythical lost record that was as heavy as ever a heavy has heavied.

And, after finally listening to it, it was indeed as good as advertised. So I had to hunt down Holy Mountain. and Volume 1. Vol 2 still eludes me in the physical sense.

So, basically, I kind of like Sleep in the "so much listening it might as well be osmosis" way.

Eons ago, when I was finishing highschool... :whateva: ...I was into metal and "grunge" stuff and punk and blah, blah, blah, and CoC was new to me and Down I ruled my world (alongside Deliverance), and I was looking for new shit that was down this line that I'd never heard of. We had shitty dial up internet, and getting awesome cds of a stoner/doom ilk was damn near impossible, especially in shitty Brisbane, where every local band was either skatepunk or funk...sometimes both :barf: . Eyehategod was something we'd only seen Phil wear in Pantera videos (we were way too young to know anyone cool enough to be into this shit) and Jerusalem (as it was known) was something we'd only heard obscure whisperings about and eventually we'd see Jimmy Bower put it on in some part of the CoC Live Volume movie. So I was on the dialup and I was searching hard for something to give me that feeling in my pants (not porn, for a change, downloaded painfully one image at a time...non of this hi-def pawg anal gaping torrented in half a second like we have know {sub-note: I am into PAWGS...anal gaping, you can keep}) when eventually, I come across this really shitty sight for some fucking band called High on Fire. I was like, "meh, kinda cool name maybe, let's see what they sound like". Now, at this point, there is still no YouTube, and streaming was like playing the lottery. It might work, you might drop out half a second in. Oh yeah, and fucking REAL PLAYER!??! Fuck that shit, but that was it. So I hit some song called BLOOD FROM ZION, "sounds kinda like a cool song title, I guess," (17 yo me is a dickhead) and.......WORLD FUCKING CHANGED FOREVER!!!
Over the next few years technology and music shops got a bit better and eventually I get Jerusalem. WORLD FUCKING CHANGES AGAIN!!!
Then, Dopesmoker. FUCK, I THOUGHT IT COULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN!
And so on....
so that record and me are, as you say, osmotic. I know where you are coming from.
My mate has Vol. 2. I don't know what he paid for it, but it would've been a heap.

I love Death, and Snakes was cool, but like you said, the slick production shook me up a bit. I thought they nailed it on Death as it was slick enough to let the songs be heard and "breathe" (I dunno, that's some hippie bullshit right there) but not overproduced to the point where they are sterile. Blessed Black is still my favourite for production, though.
Those shows were great.
Don't get me started on Pompeii....

Baha! Ryan, maybe you need to get a Twitter account to alert people as to when not to follow you into the toilet. Although, if you're anything like me, people should know that shit anyway.

And you guys are sort of inspiring me to post shit that I was doing last year with this band I was jamming with, as it was just like Ryan said, one riff wonder-type of shit.
But, I'm too ball-less...

And, FUCK YES TO DEATH (the band)!!!!!!! :success:

I LOVE my AOR, but I'm sure I'm going to pick up an Ironheart, considering I could just get another AOR for about half the cost. As I understand it, they basically heavily updated AORs with a hint of a more "modern" tone.

thanks man, that does help...my one reason for not considering the AOR is because i would never be able to play it at TV volume levels at home, where as this Ironheart has a power knob that takes the amp all the way down to 1w.

I've had a lot of success running a small volume box inside of the FX loop of my AOR to tame some of the volume; running it without the bass boost on helps substantially as well. The box acts as a second MV control, so I can run the power section where it doesn't sound muffled without knocking my garage windows out.

There was a more in depth discussion here.

mate, that link was perfect...thanks so much. I've actually been going through that forum for a few days, and never cam across that thread.

So coincidentally the one eBay (that I thought i didn't win last night) was the same amp on another forum classified that I'd seen. The guy told me that it wasn't available anymore, but then he just messaged me, telling me its still available as it didn't sell on eBay. So luckily i can now go to his house jam on it and see how it is.

I love them all :idk: As someone with a shit ton of recording experience, and mixing and mastering experience, I can truly appreciate good production. I may not like it as much Blessed Black Wings (which is my fav HoF album) but I can't see how increasing the production quality can reduce the quality of the music, unless its Kvlt Black Metal. I felt the guitar work and musicianship as a whole on Snakes was awesome.

Oh and since we're on it....

My fav death song with one of my fav drummers (Gene Hoglan)....

completely agree, but i always thought my view on this was biased as Snakes was the first album i heard of theirs...but every other album since for me hasn't been as good instrumentally...i still like the others, but Snakes is special. I think Matt was really pushing himself to do new things and get out of his comfort zone with riffs and solos etc.

I agree he did push himself past his comfort zone, and maybe that's why I like it. The opening riff?!?! Totally eddie van halen on meth. Lurve it.

Gene rules. I'm a massive SYL fan, too.
Sorry, wasn't saying that newer HoF is bad BECAUSE it has slick production (I actually really love that Matt has gone thrashier, speedier, shred-ier) but I just like the sort of aural aesthetic that the first 3-4 albums have. Snakes and De Vermis both sound beautiful, I just think that sort of audio fog that's going on on the ealier records adds to the medieval vibe.
Opening to snakes slays. So metal.

Fuck TJ, again, I'm an asshoel. I got so caught up in my nostalgia trip, I forgot to mention how awesome your green burst turned out.:picard:
I want that on a guitar. :doom:

Has anyone seen Nick's video of the HM2 yet?

Well now I need to go back and re listen to snakes. I only really listened to it once or twice when it first came out and nothing really grabbed me on it. Although I do have to say I kinda like the little weird stuff as what really grabbed me the first time was Khanrad's Wall and Turk as a combo. That twelve string (I think) he used on khanrad just stood out to me. Death was also HOF first album I really listened to. Also I agree on the production values. I just think Death struck the best balance between keeping the rawer feeling that I think fits with HOF and the clean of making the music clear. I think some of the fog on the earlier albums is a little too much. I don't like listening to some black metal because they went too lo-fi and it takes away from the music (while others will say it lends to the music because of the genre but :idk: )

Also TJ. Really great work on the doom train shell.

I completely agree with the cleaner production being a shock on Snakes, but I think there is no bad High On Fire album. They're one of the most consistently good bands in heavy music, in my opinion. Death Is This Communion is one of the better metal albums of the past decade, but everything else is above-average to great.

Yes, yes you do. Snakes is one of those albums that because it strays from the HoF norm is easy to write off, but IMO if you really listen to the album there's alot of good stuff in there. I do agree that Death struck a good medium, but I slightly prefer the foggy raw tone of BBW (hehehehe) as it sets a really good mood and atmosphere. Yet like on thieves its just too much IMO. I also concur about black metal, but after recording and mixing like 7 or 8 black metal bands that wanted that crazy lo-fi sound, I've grown a certain appreciation for recording in hi-fi and converting it to lo-fi. It's not quite as easy as you would think.
