Do it! I love heavy black work. That said, maybe talk to te artist and see how close he thinks he can go to that image and it still age well. I have the word kindred on one arm in a font that looks like typewriter buttons, the guy told me it would probably run together and it totally did. It's hardly legible now. I don't care though. Other arm has a stripe of checkerboard and I talked with the guy about how to make it work, looks perfect to this day.

I have a big piece on my side/ribs. Hurt bad there, but who cares? Just do it! If you end up with a big swath of solid black that's cool too.

It's a surprise! I'll hook up some pics when it's all said and done. All you need to know is that it's gonna be BALLER, SON.

kbithecrowing wrote:Looks like crap as in the solid black itself? Like it ages inconsistently or something? I really like the aesthetic of solid blackwork but have not done a lot of research on how those pieces age.

I do know the lines with negative space would have to be wider than they are in the photo I posted, cuz that shit would bleed instantly

Well my thing with it would be the amount of ink it would take to do that and do it very consistent. I have a few larger black spots on my sleeve and those were a fucking bitch to heal because of how much ink my artist had to smash into my arm. I had that shit touched up three times before it took to where it looks right. Of course mine is in the ditch (back side of the elbow), so it's harder to heal.

Also, if the negative space isn't far enough apart, you could end up with a blob of ink later down the road from what I've heard. Never experienced it but it scares me. I've heard from tattoo artists that the ink in tattoos starts to breakdown after about 5 years or so. Again, don't know if this is true.

Also, if you ever God forbid, change your mind about that tat, good luck covering it up. I have a full sleeve I hate. All tats I got when I was 18.

Sorry if it seems like I'm hating, just sharing my thoughts. :)

Just gonna jump in quick and say Kbi, while I love that design, I'm with jwar. It might not look so great without more negative space on your body. The key to good and great black work is negative space.
Also keep in mind, geometric designs are incredibly difficult to replicate on the body due to the fact that it's 3D and organic and imperfect.
Artists hate trying to make things look straight on skin.
Having said that, it's not impossible to do, but you will be narrowing the field of artists down and looking for specialists.
I'd say find some one that does that Thomas Hooper sort of thing with geometric figures and space, take them that design and your ideas and let them cook you something special up.
Definitely a strong foundation.
