Since I couldn't swap necks, I modded and fixed up the Johnson bass a little more.
The first issue I addressed was the way the pickup was mounted. The pickup itself screws to the body from the back of the bass, which I expected for being a copy of a Travis Bean pickup. I'd already screwed in holes from the rear of the bass to attach the pickup, but screwed in all the way the pickup sat wayyyyy too low in the cavity. So last night I found two fairly large metal bolts, put the mounting screws through them, and used them as risers in the back of the pickup. Worked like a charm!
Next thing I did was add a small killswitch for fun where the extra pickup volume knob was located. This made me feel a little bit better about no extra holes in the control knob section.
I also put a thumb rest on the bass because the pickup is too narrow to rest my finger on to play it. I rolled a small sheet of aluminum, drilled a set of holes through each side of the piece, and then attached it to the body, using again two screws as risers. Sanded down the rough edges using sandpaper, super comfortable now
Lastly I put some stickers on the pickguard!
