That's what I'm sayin. I get that fit and finish,...QC,...playability,...and customization is a lot higher than on an out of the box Fender,...but I could never take such an expensive bass to a bar gig; which accounts for 99.99999% of the gigs I play, without constantly looking over my shoulder.

Shit my 30 year old Squier Jazz probably plays and sounds just as good as some of the Booteek Jazz Clones out there, and I only paid 200 bucks for it.

The only bass that I could honestly see myself dropping that kind of money on, even if I HAD millions, would probably be a Wal. They have one of the most unique sounds of any bass (I can almost always pick the sound of a Wal off of any album). All the Laklands and Sadowsky and shit like that ... meh.

Wals have a totally unique tone,...same with Carl Thompsons and I'm sure Ken Smiths,...etc etc etc.

Oh and old Gretsch 6070s are pure sex.

Except with Flats.

The only bass I'd drop >2k on is an Electrical, simply because I'm sure it would break me before I could break it.

I gigged my old Skjold P at some dingy dives...never scared me. Of course the most damage I ever did to it was hitting against a freaking coffee table the first time I took it to practice. :picard:

Fuck you, I love my Lakland, provided I have one of the Skyline sereis basses, they are totally worth the money, except that I know a guy and got mine for half price, OH YEAH!!!

So I really need to post on this forum more, and this thread seems to be a good comeback point.

Now where are the boobs?

Easy there, champ. I wasn't attacking you. I was just saying that they're meh to me. To me, no matter how custom and booteek a fender clone is, it's still a fender clone.

I'd say improvement not clone, different strokes for different folks I guess, I like Fender's basses, teh Geddy LEe sig. is actually pretty cool, andinterms of "Boutique" instruments, I don't think they're worth it, look at any albumn you own, their probably playing a fender or Gibson, or any other Brand Name guitar-A big price tag doesnt mean big talent - unless you're Mr. Manring that is!

And to be honest,...the glorified Jazz Bass moniker really doesn't apply to many of the Skylines. Skylines equal to (give or take) Am. Std or MIJ/CIJ Jazz Bass? I'd go there, but they are also priced the same (give or take). The Skyline and most Stock Fenders are layman's bass where as the Chicago made Laklands are more,.....ummmmmm,.....yeah nevrmnd.

;)

I've done plenty of bar gigs with $2,000+ basses. Them shitz is meant to be played, why the fuck wouldn't I?

PS: Skylines are a ripoff. I love mine, but seriously, they aren't worth $1,200. Fun fact: no matter what the headstock says, pretty much every Asian import bass is made by Cort. I find that much harder to stomach than a really nice $2,500 bass with impeccable attention to detail.

BUT... I don't have a problem with either case actually. A good bass is a good bass, and everybody has different tastes. I love my Bordwell and Bee just as much as I love my G&L and Skyline. Two were completely handmade by single dude operations, the other two were assembly line instruments. All are awesome, to me at least.

It took me a while to warm up to my G&L but I love it and have no regrets for the 1500 I paid for it.

Too me it's the tone that you are going for. For some it's a 300 dollar pevey. And to others it's a 4000 Carl thompson, but that is the best thing about music insturments. So many options for us to choose from :)
