I thought it was so funny when Dunlop finally made that video about the Muse bassist's rig, and the tech admitted that he does all the effect changes backstage, and the bassist doesn't actually control any of it. All of talkbass worships that dude, and it's like, no one mentions that he can't be bothered to turn on his own damn pedals? I lost so much respect for what they do as a band when I heard that. Why not have the tech play the bass for you too? Why not just stand up there and look pretty, since that's apparently all you're up there to do.

I bet that guy doesn't make a number about it, many bigger names really give all of that for their tech to do. I bet they could do the Irish pedal tap dance, BUT they are keeping the pedalboard safe from shit thrown on stage and avoid any possible hassle with the pedals. There can be several other reasons too, why to do so so I'm not taking sides but it DOES make the fanboys look a little silly.

And I've seen twice a guitar tech actually play rhythm guitar, too, behind the amp row
when the guitarist could have just used a phrase looper. Or just do without and live with the song sounding different live than on record.

and yeah, when i saw the chillis they let the second guitarist come ONSTAGE!!!! for 2 songs....
i dunno it was like when i saw blur and they had a keys player and second guitarist onstage... just made me sad

There's some where I think it's just laziness. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman had their techs controlling their pedalboards too, which baffled me because all they use basically is a wah pedal apiece.

I will never understand how bands are not ok with doing this. I would much rather see a band who play stuff completely different to how it sounds on record than a band who gets everything perfect by having extra musicians who aren't actually in the band.

Yeah, I mean, I understand wanting to protect your shit from things being thrown, so having them in drawers back stage is one solution. But at least have the controller up there yourself. Maybe it's just me, but I always consider the pedal shuffle that I do to be part of the performance. I like seeing the way that guys use their pedalboards on stage, it makes me respect them just a little bit more. (like Omar and Juan keeping all their shit straight at a TMV show, or Justin and Adam doing the same shit at a Tool show)

You are correct that Chris no longer switches any of his effects on stage anymore. There's are two good reasons for this: 1) there are so many pedals that are to be triggered at the same time, no one has enough legs to do it all at once; 2) considering the spectacle of their show, and how the stage will frequently move/shift or they move on the stage, it's completely rational to trigger the different effect switches off stage. He would need separate triggers if he was on the tower, or if he was on the terrace thingy they had when I saw them...etc.
They are an extremely tight band live. Whether you like them or not, you have to give them props for a great live show. When I saw them in MSG, every song was perfectly played, without a mistake in the whole production, all while playing on moving towers and running around the stage (except for Dom on the drums). Their instrument switches were seamless and there wasn't a noticeable flaw in the entire production.
P.S. if it's any consolation, I think Matt still manipulates the Fuzz Factory/Probe and Phase 90 built into the Manson's which have them, and the Whammy whenever he solos in Newborn and other songs. I'd love to hear him mess around with an AB-Synth...

Well ok, yeah, it's hard to switch on your pedals when you're 30 feet in the air. If that's your thing, fine. I personally hate that kind of shit. I hated that shit when Motley Crue did it 25 years ago too. Just stand up on stage and play. But that's just me, and I accept that there are people out there that want to see these ridiculously elaborate stage shows.

1) I heard a Black Keys song on the radio the other day. I assume it was a new-ish single. Sounded way different from what comes in my head when I think "The Black Keys."

I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. Quite frankly I'd settle for just seeing them playing my favorite songs. The spectacle is just the icing on the cake, for me.
For a while, Muse was my favorite live performance, but then I saw Radiohead live... I'm still surprised at how solid their pedal board skills are. Ed and Jonny are switching multiple pedals on and off during a song, and Thom does a decent amount of effect switching for his voice (mainly) in time.
Speaking of which, I've found a recent up to date picture of Jonny's pedalboard:
