Yes I know I said I'd stay away from TB, but I'm trying to grow a thicker skin and not take TB so seriously and get all butthurt by dumbasses. Still ILF > TB.

Ha, ^^^

In other Tech 21 news,...The company is set to announce at Winter Namm 2011 that it is switching niches and will start using preamp tubes to emulate the classic Solid State amps of the 80's and 90's.

 Awesome.

I don't get the whole TUBES = GOOD thing. I mean even amps without tubes often have a little tube drawing or some sort of "tube-like" description in their product literature what-have-yous. I'm a tube guy but guess what: there are plenty of great sounding solid state amps! I'M SERIOUS AND STUFF.

Clean tone you can go either way. Both my amps are SS and the one that I use fuzz with,...I push so much power and move enough air that it sounds pleasing to my ears. I just want to know how my fuzzes will sound through an all tube amp. Word on the street is it's a more palatable sound, but I won't know if I don't try it. My guess is pushing fuzz through Tube Emulation does not equal the same thing.

There's no doubt that fuzz -> tube is a majestic thing, but tube emulation works with fuzz well enough. I made a bunch of recordings with an Attack Goat and Woolly Mammoth into four different scenarios: mic'd tube amp, straight into the board, into a BJFE Blue Berry then into a board, and finally a DI-EQ thingy with the treble rolled off into the board.

The mic'd arrangement was best, but the Blue Berry sounded great with fuzz, direct sounded like shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, and then just an EQ with the treble completely rolled off did pretty good really.

I've been a member of Talkbass for awhile and there are a few things on there that annoy the crap out of me, but other things I love.

Things I'll never understand:

-Clubs...seriously I don't get it. I watch and watch these slew of club threads and just don't understand. I finally joined one, and still don't get it. What is the point?
-Guitar Center threads. I swear it seems like there is a thread started every week about how someone hate GC. Who gives a shit if you like or dislike GC? Not I, that's for sure. If you hate it so much, stop fucking shopping there!
-Trolls in the effects forum and the effects forum in general. I used to think the effects forum was super useful, but I'm finding more and more that it's all fanboyish stuff and a lot of people don't have real constructive things to say. Most of the useful threads get lost in the mix of "how do I get this tone?" So annoying. I'm curious about gear too but if someone starts a new thread in there, it will end up two ways. One someone will instantly mock that person (even if they are new) and say "use the search button dumbass" or no one will have anything even related to the OP's question posted. Drives me nuts!
-People who start threads about how expensive their bass is and people who start threads about how they don't understand expensive basses. I hate threads of this nature because they are just a waste of bandwidth. I mean honestly, what does it matter to you or I how much someone spends on a bass? It really doesn't. If we can't afford it, that's not their problem. Obviously they have more money than you or more credit, so making a thread for them to explain how they are more successful in life helps how?

I will say this. I have got a lot of good info off of TB and love looking at the Classifieds and Effects forum. I could leave everything else though. I don't care to compare penis sizes or who's technique is better. Or why you should you this effect over that effect, but then not offer any solid evidence of how it's actually better. I just don't care for that type of thing.

I like this place though. Seems light hearted and not so serious. That's awesome.

My only disconnect with expensive basses is the booteek Jazz Bass market. I get that the options for customization is limitless. The playability and QC is higher,...but In the end you're just getting a glorified Jazz Bass. A status symbol. "Look I can spend $3000 on a bass when the $1500 (which is still a lot of money) version will do the job just as well".

Now if you go out and get something that is truly unique and has a distinct sound that you won't get with any other bass and have to spend $3000 to get it,...I can respect that.

Case in point (leading up to show off time,...sorry),...I know a bassist who has no money but has a Carl Thompson and the story is, he somehow got a hold of C. Thompson's phone number and gave him a call. Over the course of the conversation CT decided this kid was cool enough that he'd get started on a bass for him and would except payments when the kid could make em (which he eventually paid the bass off).

I played this bass last night and it's an amazing sounding bass. Maybe worth 3gs.

Here is me and the bass in question,...and I'm not even going to post this on TB because they aren't cool enough (present company excluded of course,.... :thumb:). It needs a good clean and check got scratchy pots,...knobs need replacing. The fella that owns it primarily plays his upright.

I would apologize for the iPod Touch pic,...but ya'll can deal with it.

I don't begrudge anybody about their choice of expensive basses. I went the boutique route, enjoyed it and if I had unlimited funds would still have it, but I figured out that two Musicman's are better for me than one Boutique. However, I understand why people wouldn't want to play my basses and I also understand that I could do what I do with a MIM Pbass. As long as some guy isn't being arrogant about how expensive their bass is and belittling other peoples gear then why really care? Waste of energy IMO.

True dat,...although MM Big Al > MIM Fender :p

I avoid griping about it,...I just think that if you are going to spend that much,...get something unique and exotic,...but different strokes for different folks.

FWIW I'd love to own that Orange Lakland Joe Osburn with Dark Stars that floats around the TB Basses Section. That thing is gorgeous.

The more years that pass by, the more I appreciate finer instruments. I used to hate Alembic basses but at this point I "get" the whole boutique thing, because the differences can be pretty massive. Tone, feel, quality, and other elements are sometimes more than worth it, even with glorified Jazz basses. :)*

I must admit, I have played an Alembic 8 string that sounded like angels, and a $5000+ custom that I couldn’t get a decent sound out of. It sure was pretty to look at.

I haven’t been overly impresses with the high end Jazz on steroids creations out there either. Nicely built and very pretty but…

I’ll stick with Fenders, they may only be the F150 of the bass world, but feel right, sound right and have been getting the job done for 60 years.

Favorite gripe;”has any one tried this that or the other thing” thread where first 10 posts are “no never heard of it, I have a xyz and it’s better”

Ah it’s Christmas so in the spirit of the season I shall forgive the stupid and the douches.
