That being said I m gonna watch a couple of tutorials tonight, maybe I'll change my mind, I just went through the manual a few times.
I find demos often not interesting because of the different musical context - and I know that's my bad, functions are functions after all, no matter the kind of stuff you play with the machine.

I really get your point D.o.s., I m just looking for something I can use without all the record/import/pc/export thing. My workflow with guitars, noises or whatever, has always been to use the PC only to record once the writing process is mostly done.
Not that I hate to use it to write and try things, but a big part of this approach is the fact that at home I rarely have the chance to turn on the PC, plug everything, record, etc.. So I do it only when I already have a clear idea of what I want to do.

I think if you are absolutely ok with recording a sample on something else and adding it to the MS you should consider one. Because all the recording, sequencing, changing, amending, whatever is done live within the unit itself.

If this is like a 10,000% dealbreaker then it is what it is.

I would share something I made with just the MS but it's waiting on vidret to finish his contribution to the comp.

I have an M:S and really like it, but I mostly think of it as a sketchpad for starting ideas that I pull into a DAW and chop up/record over/layer/etc. The additional step of having to drag and drop samples is maybe annoying if you're trying to use it as a standalone do everything machine in a DAW-free hardware situation, but it took like 2sec for me to drop a 606 kit, a couple of synth bass samples, and whatever go-to sounds I use into it that I can grab whenever I want. I can see how it would not be the machine to pick if your whole deal is doing live acoustic capture and sample manipulation on the fly, but honestly for what I want to do with it the simplicity and the limitations are honestly bonuses.

I’m starting to get a little annoyed that so much modern equipment is designed to work in conjunction with a DAW. The M:S would be perfect if I was already working with a DAW and wanted something a little more hands on to work with before pulling everything back into the DAW (if you overlook its limited envelope functionality).

I spend 9-10 hours a day staring at a computer screen for work. I don’t want to do that when I get home. As I currently have my life set up, I only turn on my laptop once every other week (or less). Limited functionality, standalone samplers have a place, and I wish there more options available on the market currently.

watched some videos last night and my opinions remains the same, model:samples has most of the thing i'd like to use in a sampler, but the inability of recording samples directly on it is a deal-breaker. After watching a couple of detailed tutorials Digitakt scares me less than i thought, and seems something i'd like to spend tons of hours with. (Un)luckily right now i don't have the time and the funds for it, but now it's on the top of my future-gear list.

I agree with the DAW thing. I don't mind working 'in the box' and I do a lot in there with composition and recording, but I much prefer to have gear that works on its own - it's more fun for me.

I’m thinking my next sampler is most likely a new iPad and Drambo. If I’m gonna need a computer or device for sample loading, why fight it?
