As a man who was born in the 80's (82), all my nostalgia is 90's music or later 80's. So I obviously have a love hate relationship with a lot of it.

There is however a metric fuck ton of good music in the 90's that did not fall under teen angst. It's sad if all you got out of the 90's was a few bands when there were so many good ones. Mudd is right too, a lot of them were straight out of the 80's and a lot sold out to get rich in the 90's.

I still hold to the 90's being the best as far as bands progressing into better musicians though. So many greats became greater in that decade.
