Which is not a bad thing, but it is a thing. The problem is that his archetypes don't venture beyond the same tired antihero cliches that have dominated the last 20 years of 'real' television, and when you pull the mysterious bits out of it you're just left with NYPD Blue... in LA!

If they just hadn't had the last two scenes!!!! Bah just finished it and I'm all emotional. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Seemed like great pacing and plot growth. That's something that tends to kill shows for me at some point, either too big of jumps or too slow in the middle.

So this show has achieved the closest ILF equivalent of critical consensus, then. Surprised!

I do agree about the end though, would have been better without the cheesy second season setup.

I felt like the last two scenes were good? They answered some BIG questions that really were hanging out there. And I felt like the little D&D session the kids were playing at the end was a little symbolic of how the show ended? Like, there are going to be questions at the end but that doesn't make the adventure less meaningful, nor does it mean they should keep adventuring until they tie up all those loose ends.

If it were more accurate though there'd be more sarcastic bitching and boners.
And sarcastic bitching about people's boners.
And hugs.
All with an analog synth dronescape soundtrack.

I heard the monster in season 2 is a sentient boner tree.

There was plenty of emotional hugging it out and sarcasm too, though. Less boners, which i'm actually glad for?

And, when you think about it, analog synths are basically one step beyond fuzz pedals, in a way. All warm sustain and square waves.

I started my second watch of it the other night with my partner. But she left after the first episode. Still. Classic D&D name-dropping Demogorgon (i might prefer the other demon lords) and good synth sounds and Alien references and 80s horror pastiches in general get me off. It was probably my favorite genre-fiction nostalgia-trip in ages.

Late to the party but I just started watching this and it's great.

Also just finished the entire thing. I thought it was excellent, and I agree that the second season setup was a bummer. Don't really feel like I have stuff that needs to be answered. Except maybe why Nancy ended up with Steve

Would it have made sense though if he'd just come back after all that shit, spent a few days in the hospital and everything was hunky dory again?

And all that 'energy' was still there, nothing happened to it, no gates were closed and if they had been it would have felt rushed, there would have just about been enough time for a cliche (in the bad way) self destruct sequence or something... which still wouldn't have been that final.

So even if there wasn't going to be a second season, in the vein of many 80s horrors where something happens after the ending (nightmare on elm street, scanners etc.) it still makes sense and if you don't want answers you can leave it there and come to your own conclusions so it works as a set up and a closure IMO.
