I don't tend to get outraged easily these days. Side effect of so much crap online oversimplified or exaggerated to elicit a knee-jerk reaction I suppose. So when something on the surface seems way out of whack I wait to see if I've got all of the info before getting all up in arms.

But the more info I got the more fucked up this move became.

(1) Oh, 3Leaf/Spencer is putting out an OD and and OD/Preamp/DI that look exactly like Doug's stuff. That seems pretty sketchy. Maybe he's using leftover enclosures and the guts are totally different.

(2) Okay, so he's admitting that these are basically just tweaked Darkglass circuits. That alone puts you in the realm of jackass. And he's saying they are leftover enclosures but that doesn't makes sense because one of the side holes is drilled differently. Alright, so best case scenario for Spencer now is that he had a big hand in developing the VMT circuit and he feels he has the right to put his stamp on that design. Seems petty and beneath a guy who can clearly make his own stuff but I guess it's not that different from getting booted from a band and using a riff you developed to make a new song.

(3) Hmm, Doug is now confirming that Spencer had nothing to do with the design of the VMT circuit.

Three strikes. You're a douche.

Doesn't help that TB is basically saying, "yeah, they look exactly like Darkglass pedals and he's admitting that it's his 'version' of Doug's circuit, but let's withhold judgement (read: stop the conversation) about the ethics of the whole deal until someone buys one and provides a gutshot. That would involve buying one, so I'm definitely out of that process.

I owned the first B3K sent Stateside (#004) and besides that making me a special, special snowflake it means I had contact with Doug (and Hugo) five years ago. I've traded messages with Doug over the years since and as recently as yesterday when I applauded him for taking the high road. And he's been the same super nice, super helpful dude the whole time. He's responded at length every single time I've talked to him and he conducts himself like a real pro.

I've also owned a bunch of 3Leaf stuff (pretty much everything except the Pwnzor and Little Black Box). No real negative interactions with Spencer, but his responses have always been kind of curt. he weird thing is I remember Spencer talking about his own design for a bass OD (a clean blend in parallel with a modded Marshall Bluesbreaker circuit IIRC) before he was even in business with Darkglass. He said at one point that he had a working prototype. Dude could create his own design and chose not to I guess to be petulant. I've still got a Wonderlove and an Enabler which I get a lot of use out of. I'm thinking if I can find suitable replacements I'll move them along. T

And while I've owned a B3K (two or three times I forget now), a VMT, a B7K and a Duality, I don't currently have any Darkglass stuff just because Doug's ODs and Fuzz designs (while great sounding) don't really fit what I'm currently doing. So last night I put in an order for a Super Symmetry.
