No I'm sorry your all making opinion based arguments. That does not mean I'm wrong. Religion is NOT to blame. Once again. The people who believe in it on the other hand, yes. How the hell can you blame a religion for something like this? How? It makes no fucking sense.
Religion is an idea or a belief system.
The PEOPLE (read the word and let it sink into your skull) are the ones committing the acts. Not the religion.
I've have known many muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists (which is debatably a religion), Hindus and so on and so forth and they were all kind, loving people. So did religion make these people do bad acts or did being bad people make them do bad acts? Really think about it.
I've been Catholic my whole life, do I burn witches, condemn homosexuals and throw things at women at abortion clinics? NO. But you'd better believe that Catholics in the past have because they were fucking idiots who used their religious beliefs for their own sick gain. Their own twisted perspective.
I'd rather not talk more about this in this thread, as there's obviously going to be a debate and I'm not going to yield. haha. Sorry. Let's just show our French bros love. We can debate religion elsewhere.

I assure you I'm properly carbed up. I'm very annoyed at how people are twisting shit though. Can't change that with carbs.Chankgeez wrote:eat some French bread.

The religion informs the behaviors and gives justification for the actions and beliefs. If there was no light at the end of the tunnel there would be little incentive to, for example, blow yourself up at a soccer game.jwar wrote:No I'm sorry your all making opinion based arguments. The idea that you can say "the religion isn't bad it's the people acting on it's behalf" is a cop out and an easy way to divert blame. There is a reason this stuff is being done, and the idea that it has no religious basis is totally wrong.
So, once again, I'll explain it to you. You blame the religion because it is the defining set of rules that allow someone to make the moral equivalence that these sort of things are justified, because they're fighting "the good fight". The basis for "the good fight" comes from their religious convictions, and the convictions empower the act. QED
Now, you can split hairs and say "it's not the religion it's the power structure of the society/group that is taking a set of religious beliefs and tuning them to a very specific pitch in order to advocate violence" but there isn't a single major religion out there that doesn't advocate for struggle on the path to divine victory. The whole Judeo-Christian belief system is based on it and so is Islam. That's their boner. They have a boner for struggle and conflict and overcoming demons -- you're fucking Catholic bro you know this already -- so the idea that this inherent set of biases and innate world view that's informed by this set of beliefs DOESN'T have anything to do with what's happening is, as they say, total fucking bullshit.

I'm not sure if some of you are trolling or what...
Saying this has nothing to do with religion is just... I don't have any word that wouldn't be insulting so I might just stop here. I kind of get what you're trying to say but it's just a very, very weak argument.

Religion also plays a huge role in bringing like minded assholes together.
I doubt the guys that planned and executed this attack met playing pickup basketball
and then after a long conversation about Pokemon, realized they just so happened
to share some common religious beliefs.

Sure. Sometimes it does.MEC wrote:Religion also plays a huge role in bringing like minded assholes together.
Because something has happened in the past is no reason to argue it will happen significantly again. It also is an argument based entirely on confirmation bias because there's absolutely no way to measure how many religious gatherings/groups are organized for entirely peaceful/constructive purposes.
Of course I've had this debate before and I know that the anti-religious camp have abandoned logic for bigotry in an attempt to combat illogical bigotry. So I'll stoop to your level and simply remind you that between 12 and 20 million people were killed in the name of state atheism under Soviet rule.

Yeah, seriously. Religious extremists kill more than one hundred people explicitly because of religion and some of you find a way to blame atheists ?

I'm not blaming atheists. I'm saying that there's no reason for a tolerant person to use tragedies to justify the attitude that one belief system is somehow better than the other.
You're simply responding to hatred and intolerance with hatred and intolerance. It's not equal to violence, but it's bigotry and Islamaphobia.
A small group of people killed in the name of their interpretation of a religion. Religion as a whole or even Islam as a whole is not even something we should be talking about.
What you call "splitting hairs" I call approaching the topic from a mature and reasonable perspective.D.o.S. wrote:Now, you can split hairs and say "it's not the religion it's the power structure of the society/group that is taking a set of religious beliefs and tuning them to a very specific pitch in order to advocate violence" but there isn't a single major religion out there that doesn't advocate for struggle on the path to divine victory. The only meaningful difference between ISIS/ISIL and the crazed fundies in Arkansas or whatever is the budget and the scope of their territory.
