it made me really sad, personally, that deb didn't make it & that he started to realize he cared about some people & had fucked it all up. i also felt like his realizing that & going elsewhere to get away from those he'd wound up caring about was to revert to killing & not caring. the whole show was about a serial killer after all... much as he was the main character & "protagonist" & who everyone loved (if they didn't hate the show from the getgo or after whatever season), he was a freaking serial killer. i loved that he was taking out bad guys, BUT HE WAS ONE. much as i hoped for a different ending, the more i think about it, maybe the writers were trying to get that point across w/ how they ended it... eh just felt like ranting. still thinking about it...

Right. One of the big things about that show was the presence of family, and how that dynamic worked with a character who ostensibly has no emotions. Ending fit a whole lot better than an actual escape with Harrison and Hannah.

when they brought the trainee in i kinda wondered if they were gonna do a spinoff w/ him. glad that isn't happening.

& despite thinking she's hot (w/ or w/o how they shoulda cut & dyed her hair) i still wish they'd have offed her & had him stay w/ sis & kid.

I think that would've been a great ending--my suspicion was that it was going to end in a Silence of the Lambs homage with Dexter calling Deb from a cafe in South America--but I also believe that would've been playing it safe and pandering to the audience, and to me, there needs to be a bit of risk taking in an ending, especially in a long running series like this one

heh, the silence of the lambs scenario would've been great even if it was a ripoff. i also thought deb might wind up moving to argentina w/ them at one point.

I think the ultimate cop out is that he didn't get caught, nailed dead to rights. If he is indeed a unique psychopath with the depth of his personal connections, the moment is all the more poignant because he would feel it like a typical psychopath mass murderer wouldn't.

And Deb alive to see that. I'd assume that her mortification (even privately having known for a year) would show in that she would now swear like Mother Theresa instead of like a longshoreman (that is, not at all).
