Started to read Dune. Princess Irulans Epigraphs are a major source of annoyance. Other than that I am liking it but I don't get why it is so famous yet.

So - why? I get that it's good. But I don't get the cult following.

Hmmm. Not really sure how to explain why without spoiling the story for you. How far in are you?

Yeah, if it's in the story then let's just leave it at a I'll find out. I'm about halfway through the first book. There is a long description of a dinner that's been going on for quite a while. I have tried to find something and I came up with this: The book is written from the perspective of many different characters. But what makes it special is that some - Paul Atreides and Jessica can almost read minds. So you have the advantages of an all-knowing narrator but at the same time you keep doubting if they might be wrong about what they suspect other people are thinking. That's a pretty clever construction.

I was just about to post a thread asking if anyone here reads. Apparently they do, just not that much...
I'm reading John Dies at the End right now as well and I'm seriously loving it. Highly recommend it to anyone that likes horror, comedy, and weird

Fulfilling a bit of historical geekery at the moment.
Lev Theremin basically began electronic music, AND invented the automatic door. Two of my favorite things.

I agree Dune is good - I reread it every now and then, but I also don't know why it should be held up as some kind of ultimate masterwork; good though. Maybe because so much SF and fantasy is complete garbage, the good ones are incredible by comparison?

Dune gets better, stick with it.
I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights. Heathcliffe is a dick. But so is everyone else in that book.

Haha yeah, I did overlook that thread. I just searched to word read or reading and this one came up first; didn't even notice there were two.
