This happened to my dad, and my grandfather, and probably my great grandfather as well. I've been determined to be a better parent.

Loving your kids just doesn't cut it sometimes. If you really loved them then you'd let them go. Not literally but in a philosophical way. Love for a child should be unconditional.

I think it needs to be a balancing act. In my time as a squad leader in the infantry I had the privilege of leading a few of the video game "we"re all special" it's ok to fail, little timmy is mommys perfect little boy kind of kids.

Ok, now we're going to the middle east where the nice folks would like to kill you. Not prepared.

The world is a cold uncaring place that will chew you up and spit you out if you let it. So I think kids do need to learn the value of hard work, to learn it's not ok to quit when things get a little rough or unpleasant. they shouldn't have things handed to them on a platter because when they have to fend for themselves it aint gonna work that way.
But on the other hand "YOU"LL BE A LAWYER AND LIKE IT!!!" Not really cool.
I hope I can be a good parent some day. To help my kid find their place in life and set them up to succeed at it. Sure I'll be disappointed if they want to be a construction worker or a Doctor instead of playing music, but I'll try to install values in them that will let them thrive at whatever they turn out to be.
Oh yeah, if we ever have a girl she will be trained to be an MMA super ninja. Sure, date my daughter, I dare you. Here, wear this mouth guard so you dont loose your teeth and get a concussion.

Dude, I totally agree with the all of that. The last part especially!
It's all about balance. Angry is right, you feel responsible for identifying the mistakes you know you're parents made with you, but sometimes you learn that they were right when you thought they were wrong. Having said that though, I also kind of fell like extending that to a world view and raising my kids to the point where they can identify what's wrong with the world and recognize what needs to be done about it. I think if you can get em to that stage, then you should have no hassle setting them free, you've given them all the resources they need.
My daughter is definitely not going to be a pushover.

I do agree with Skip on the gun thing though. I'm only like 5'10" though, so I'm gonna need one.

I want to go on a massive 90s rant at this point, but I'll stop myself at Icantation!
Fairly certain there's an anal cunt song about Kyle from incantaion's mustache...

much wisdom in the last two posts.

To get back to the Heavies...
HOLY SHIT OUR NEW DRUMMER RULES!

Shit sounded hellishly good tonight. We're 4 practices in with him and our focus has allready shifted to tweaking material and getting the new song together.

Van acquisition is also a priority. I'm thinking older the better because I could actually work on it and not need to pay a mechanic. Other guys offered to chip in but I dunno, kinda not sure we should have band property yet. I couldn't be happier with who I'm making music with now though. Very cool dudes. We'll have some live footage soon I hope. We could rock a short set now and will have an hours worth of material soon :thumb:

It is a balancing act, you're right. As a father and a mother you are are supposed to teach your children to fear you. Not to be scared, but to respect you and fear disappointing you. But you have to do this with love rather than harsh criticism and aggression. Kids will take honest, unconditional love and encouragement as a sign that you as a parent require their respect and trust. If they do not trust you then it's most likely your fault, not the child's. It's like blaming a Pit Bull for attacking a 11-year old girl when the owner is a volatile and vicious person and has trained the dog to act similarly.

In all honesty, most children if they're provided with lots of love and given clear boundaries will flourish themselves and learn to respect what they have in life. They will accept that sometimes it will be necessary to put your head to the grindstone and plough on through. In other words, I agree with you. :)

This is a great attitude, IMO. If you've raised your children to think for themselves your job suddenly becomes that much easier. You don't have to watch them at every turn and worry about them. The best parents, and subsequently the best children, are the ones that have an understanding and a trust. For instance, I don't trust my father. I never have. He's improved over the years since becoming a Jehovah's Witness again, but he's still not someone I can approach fully. The same applies to my mother, but I do love her and appreciate her.

I found two guitar companies in the last few weeks and I thought you folks might be interested.

One of them is Artist Series Guitars who have been around for a couple of years now, but they've introduced something new that I find quite cool. You can now add your own artwork to a guitar or just have a blank colour for the bare minimum. The prices are right and apparently the quality is there. You're buying direct from the seller so the prices are low. They had a 30% off sale I was tempted by for the design own guitar, but I have no design to work with and need the money for the Dunwich.

I also found this brand-new (started 2013) company that was originally a Japanese brand from the 70's that eventually went out of business. Some American dude took over the name and rights and is now producing guitars in Korea for pretty decent prices and great specifications. I have no idea how good the quality control is and whether it can match guys like Reverend and Duesenberg, but it looks like a pretty cool guitar.

Yeah, I dig their work too. I saw the praise that gearmanndude was awarding them, so colour me intrigued. They look pretty cool for sure.

There's alot of good parental advice in the last 2 pages. I'm going to summarize my thoughts as this: I plan on raising my kids to be the best at what they want to do and to be themselves for themselves and nobody else. I don't care what they end up doing for a career as long as they do it with passion and drive. I'd love for them to become musicians but I also won't be disappointed if they aren't. I want to encourage thinking and working for themselves but respecting the world as it is a vicious vicious place.

If they offered a baritone option i'd be all over this, but alas it looks as if they don't.
