I was thinking about putting one together for my bandmate to play around with since he uses the dod. The layout blog also linked to this: http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... _Mods.aspx which talks all about the pedal.

http://www.benadrian.com/pedals/kwb.html

That page seems to explain what he did, looks like a Distortion + based circuit with larger coupling caps, a personally selected chip, socketed diodes that you can swap out, and the third knob is basically a diode mix knob (all the way down removes one of the the diodes and all the way up is all diodes).

Yeah it's pretty easy to mod an old DOD to KWC specs, I had a blast doing it and the results are awesome. You can go from stock to HOLY SHIT with the twist of a knob without sounding tinny

The clip knob sounds interesting. I guess as you turn the knob it blocks one of the diodes. Did you guys check out the article on primer guitar? They have some cool mods too like putting more diodes in parallel with R4 which acts as a "smooth" control. It would be interesting to hear what that sounds like.

Unfortunately the link is blocked at work.

Here you go:

Here some of my favorite mods that I like to make to this type of circuit:
Use an SPST switch to insert a .01uf cap in parallel with a .001uf cap in place of C2. This will give a 'more/less compression' type of function, or a 'smooth/open' tonality. For a more dramatic effect, make the .01uf a .047uf or so.
Add an SPST switch around C3 to add more bass by adding a .33uf cap in parallel with C3.
Change R2 and C3 to a 1k/.22uf for the same high gain frequency response but more gain potential
Change R4 to a 1m audio taper pot for better response through gain adjustment.
Add an SPST switch to add in diodes in parallel with R4. I have 1n34a and 1n4001 diodes shown here, though any can be used.
Change D1 and D2 to 1n34a and 1n4001 diodes (in series) in place of each stock diode for louder output as well as better dynamics.
Change C5 to a .0022uf and wired in series with a 1m audio taper pot to act as a tone control.

Gonna try these mods as welllllll!

*edit* How is it that 2 of my fav bands tones (KWC and Young Widows) revolve around the MXR Micro Amp yet I never see anyone using them...... :idk:

Yeah as I recalled they had A# written on the tuner but they shouted TONE SECRET and covered it.

And the Kowloon Walled Bunny drive is a broken/modded to be broken MXR Distortion, isn't it?

hahahaha those guys are pretty fucking funny!

That is correct, their guit/vox guy brought 3 different MXR Dit+'s to Ben. One sounded very different from the others and thats the one he wanted clone, the difference was that one of the diodes had a terminal broken off so he duplicated that effect as well as couple other lil mods.

Yeah, Skullbro modded my DOD250 to KWB-ish specs a little while ago. It's definitely a big part of their "clean" tone.

But mine has a starve mode. The DoS Walled Dirge-y.

Also one of my old guitarists has/had a MXR Micro Amp. He's really into John Frusciante's solo stuff, as far as tone references. That thing is awesome

That's what I hear, but I also hear a very similar grit in Young Widows clean tone and hes just using a micro amp. I'm probably going to be redoing my entire board when the baby comes in September and I wanna throw one of these on the board. I'm thinking since the SkyHammer preamp with the boost off sounds very very similar to the Dist + on medium low gain I'll probably just pickup the micro amp for a lil front end boost / base clean tone.

Micro Amp is awesome. I don't know why more guitarists don't use it.

For those embryonic tones.
