i have read about that too, but I've seen a few good quality live videos of them, mainly off of Pitchfork, and their live sound is just as crazy as their studio sound, I've also seen a couple show vids on youtube and I know I see at least a few pedals near each of the guitarists' feet.

Casey Driessen's board, as of his current tour. Questionable as some of his work might be, he's an amazing fiddle player and his work with Sparrow Quartet cannot be denied.
