You were watching that one too? Not surprised, I suppose.

I use solid state amps regularly and get compliments on my recorded and live tone, from people who fetishize vintage tube gear.

For Bass? Agreed Most definitely. I prefer tube pre's with SS power amps but some all SS amps are amazing, look at the old acoustic amps.
And guitar, actually. Some of the best tones I've ever heard on guitar came through one of those tiny Fender Jazzmaster(?) heads.

Orly?? The only full SS amp I ever really liked was the Roland Jazz Chorus. Those amps really do live up to the hype.

Yus. JC's are fucking awesome. But, for me, tube amps are only really important if you're playing with fuzzboxes. Otherwise it's all in the EQ/preamp voicing.

I think tube power sections shine at loud volumes. Those ACC 150's sound amazing at low volume. Better than My main rig does. But at gigging volume levels it doesn't hold up. Tony's Sunn concert bass is the same way. Sounds really good, but when kranked it's just not quite as amazing. That said we have a friend who runs a Meatsmoke pre into a cheap SS Kustom, I think it's 200 watts? His shit sounds really good. Now standing in front of Helms bass rig last night. Holy shitballs that sounded good. And I could feel my internal organs vibrating.

For bass at least, having really efficient cabs really changed the game with those type of amps for me. My Sunn Beta Bass was always way too saturated and mushy running through an 810 at high enough volume to be heard in a band setting. Once I had a Dually to run it through, it suddenly had enough volume with a tone I liked. On guitar it's plenty loud enough through a 412, that's the reason I still had it before I got the Duallies. I always liked that amp better as a guitar amp than a bass amp. Context and tone are pretty crucial for all that, obviously.

Power tubes at high volume have their own magic. That's the reason I have a little bit of everything. Variety is the spice of life...it's not obsessive gear hoarding. ;)
