I take the string and measure it against the position of the tuner two strings higher than it, then cut off the excess there. You have to reduce the gap when you start stringing the tiny ones though, or you'll end up with a million wraps.

Only problem is I can't ever get the end of the high e to stay in the hole without jamming something in the gap.
