Great thread/OP post.

There are a lot of douche bag cats, no doubt. There are also some really developed and nice cats, that don't seem - at least from my experience - to try and buddy up only for their needs, but actually have a kind personality.

With dogs it's more often they are happy-go-lucky but there are also some dogs that are just pieces of shit. I found this often to be the case with the smaller ones which are yappy and aggressive.

The yappy ankle-biter doggies suffer a particularly bad rap due to the compound issue of being designer breeds with heavy inbreeding in their lineage...and living with shitty humans who transplant many of their own flaws onto their critters. Or being adopted by well-meaning humans who foolishly allow the critters to run wild without any training or discipline. They become the brats & bullies of other animals in the household.

My wife's dog is a 10lb asshole, for example. I joke almost every day that I can solve his behavioral issues with one bullet, which does not amuse her.
