Talking about race in america/on the internet in an exercise in... frustration, to say the least. I read the safe spaces thread with interest but had a hard time knowing where to chime in or if it was even appropriate to do so in a community I am so new to. The fact is there probably is a large percentage of white (straight) males in this community, but also those identities are the assumed norm, especially on the internet, and obviously not everyone here is those things, or it kind of erases the people who don't fit the mould. But, trying to type out all my thoughts on the internet is a pain.

I wouldn't worry about being new in the community, this place is about as welcoming as forums get without losing the sarcasm and wild-west sensibilities that the internet deserves.

We need to make this place more diverse.

Somebody put an ILF ad up on worldstarhiphop, i'm sure that'll make something happen.

Oh this is a very welcoming forum, I love it. I am just not in the habit of tryna be all "have you heard MY opinions about race/gender/sexuality/whatever" with most people, because the primary lesson I ha e learned from years of talking about that shit is to approach it with nuance and humility, and that shit is hard on the fucking internet.

Suffice to say, it's a fine line between my disdain for "legitimate voices" and my concurrent belief that shit out there is way worse than many people realize.

I appreciate your responses, I' not very good at putting my feelings on this subject in words but reading your responses gives me more food for thought. And im glad it's been welcoming here

Race is weird. We're all so mixed now. And a lot of times we identify with a minority of my mixture. I want to do one of those expensive DNA tests to trace my family's origin. That I know if I am all Caucasian. Like a saltine cracker. I think it would be cool to find other lineage. But as I know of I have no Native American in me. My wife is like 1/8 Native American. Her family kept up and taught a lot of that culture to her growing up and she identifies with it.

I now am in charge of seven kids who are possibly 1/16 Native American and I am, not to my knowledge, Native American at all but are most definitely raising them with elements heavily influenced by that culture. I'm sure some of them will identify themselves as heavily Native American. But to most people we're just whities.

It seems as simple as teaching our differences but treating eachother equally. But fuck have we taken steps backwards recently.

I get that, and it looks like John does, too. We're talking about how fractions work. I'm having trouble seeing how anybody is a tenth anything without rounding up or down.

I was trying to be serious, but I may have been drunk. I guess the Western/Northern Hemisphere society has the benefit of internet and loads of free time, so the ability or desire to talk about our passions to the entire world is great and easy. I agree with kbit, we are more or less white dudes wanting what other white dudes have/do/make.
