I could fill up this thread for the next hundred pages. I collect quotes on this subject. Here are a few:
"If there are two opposing ideas, it is not always true that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. It is possible that one person is simply wrong."
- Richard Dawkins
"Consider it: every person you have ever met, every person will suffer the loss of his friends and family. All are going to lose everything they love in this world. Why would one want to be anything but kind to them in the meantime?"
- Sam Harris
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
- Leo Buscaglia
"Luck is statistics taken personally."
- Penn Jillette
"By remaining exactly the same today as you were yesterday, you are guaranteeing that tomorrow will be no better than today."
- Daniel Lapin
"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new."
- Socrates
"Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight."
- Benjamin Franklin

I'm a big fan of Clarke's Second & Third Laws:
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

"Do unto others 20% better than you would expect them to do unto you, to correct for subjective error."
- Linus Pauling
"You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You'll find what you need to furnish it- memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey."
- Tad Williams
"There is a distinct difference between having an open mind and having a hole in your head from which your brain leaks out."
- James Randi

Here's another one:
Just ask.They aren't mind readers.
Here is the deal, I currently manage 2 departments. One for about 7 years and one for about 3 years. Within the past year I have fallen out of love with the 2nd department and didn't want to do it anymore. So, about 2 months ago, I set up a meeting with the COO and told him I wanted to step down from that one management role, keep the original one, and told him what new areas of the company and responsibilities I wanted. Today I got confirmation that they are going to accommodate me and give me the new roles and responsibilities I wanted. The details aren't all worked out yet, but that should be finalized in the coming weeks.
Another lesson here is that if you are a good employee, your company will work to keep you around. If they didn't like me, they could have easily told me to fuck off.
