Anyone set up a guitar for stupid-low tunings?

I tune to A standard on 24 3/4 scale guitars. I use .014-.068 D'Addario baritone strings. same that Ancient Astro usesd actually for his drop G guitar. Handles the tunings fine, specially my new SG standard.

Happy accident: I bought the wrong gauge of strings for my schecter hellcat vi, so when I tuned it E-E it was spaghetti city. However, I tuned it up to B-B and it's perfect. So now I have a killer 30' scale baritone guitar for the moment. The sd jag pups slay (more than normal) in this tuning, so I'm going to have a tough decision when buying my next set of strings.

Years ago, I played in a metal band that eventually went to B tuning. That was stupid low for the time. I think I just used .013 strings on the Ibanez RG350 I had. The neck didn't cause any problems but it required a ton of gain and no mids to get any definition out of it. I tried drop A on my Gibson Explorer with .013's just because and it was fine.

I'm bumping this back from the dead just to give you doods some info.

I built a Baritone (see this page :http://www.ilovefuzz.com/viewtopic.php?f=188&t=2333&start=4725) from a Blacktop Jazzmaster body and a Warmoth 28 5/8" scale neck. I'm just waiting on the thimbles for a Mastery bridge, but for now the stock bridge is doing just well enough. I came across "New Standard Tuning" in my quest to achieve LOW lows and noticeable highs. In the regular range, you'd tune to CGDAEG (all fifths except for the high G, because a high B is way to high) but for the Baritone body, I've tuned it FCGDAC. Right now the strings are .85, .60, .40, .26, .17, .13, but I think I'm going to beef up the low strings to something like .90, .70, .46 or so. There's just enough slack that I bend the strings pretty badly when making some of these new chord shapes. I also came across a page where some guy was super awesome and made scale charts for just about every scale you'd care to play in. I already memorize scales and make chord out of the patterns, so it's been really fun learning new shapes and tones. Here's some crappily-played riffs I came up with today. I'll try and get a better recording at some point, because this doesn't quite portray how high and low it really gets.

I just bought individual bass strings from my local shop. I actually upped the gauge of the low strings to a .90, .70, and .46.

....but then I changed it all up again and now it's just in dropped Ab..... I just wasn't getting the sounds I was looking for, though the sounds I was getting were neat. I'm still on the fence about what tuning to keep it in so indecisive. I did like how it felt like playing a bass and a guitar at the same time. You can also make "power chord diads" (whatever...) just by fretting two strings on the same fret. So you can play power chords, but change them really fast to achieve crazy melodies.

Dammit. Now I might go back and change it again. I'm a sucker for anything crazy unique.

You should be able to go lower with strings that heavy. I tune to drop G with Ernie Ball 13-72s. By the way, what distortion pedal did you use for that clip?

The low F is actually just a little too loose for my taste, even with the 28" scale. I like my tension.

I actually restrung that beast into the fifths tuning again last night. I still want to experiment, though. The chords sound really full and heavy, but lack the "crunch" and whatnnot that a guitar in a dropped tuning has.

The first dirt is a Cmatmods Black Plague, which is the same as their Ratified. It kicks ass. The second dirt is a ss/bs Mini, and the last dirt is a Dwarfcraft Hair of the Dog, which IMO crushes. I threw some reverb on it towards the end, too.

I played drums in a sludge band with a guitarist in F# standard. His rig was a Gibson BFG > DBA Interstellar Overdriver > split between a Super Reverb and a Peavey VTX. Heavyyyyy.

I'm in A standard on a SG and found one thing that helps are heavier gauge strings, like 13s.

Just bought the Ernie Ball 13-72 Baritone set... Planning to try my Squier Jazzy in B or A standard for some fake baritonism so I can actually swap between fak bari and bass with the band.

Hope it's gonna be fine, hope the behind the bridge length will make it nice. I DO like my strings tighter, but might just need a bit of picking adjustment I'll let y'all know

Back when I still had the GFS Teisco knock off trem on my Jaguar, it sounded awesome behind the bridge with low tunings (between C and B standard + (double) drop Bb and A at times). Added a really cool vibe to the sound imo.

13-72 sounds about normal for those tunings, so I'd imagine you'll be fine for tension. I dunno tho, my need for light strings has warped my perception of what 'normal' tension is with guitar strings.
