Honestly, I can understand why Jamie got pissed. This is an OPEN forum, and just changing/removing things people are saying goes completely against that. Totally understand that. With this, I also understand that his post mannerisms were less than beneficial, and often derailing.

This whole thing is not the fault of the one person editing posts, but all of us. We allowed, and even encouraged at times, the behavior of SPACERITUAL! Would have been better for those bothered, mods, etc, to come out to him and ask him to tone it down a bit. Would he have said something like, "you need to tone down that mouth before I shit in it..." yea most likely, but...

Spaceritual may have amused some of you guys, but he almost never actually contributed anything substantive to any threads, other than dumb random shit here in general. When was the last time he actually posted anything to do with gear? The Devi/JHS thread was actually a serious thread about something gear related, and the whole point gets fucking lost over a discussion about Arby's? Really? In situations like that, I'd PREFER edits to just locking the damn thread.

CBA makes a good point about the Forum Personas on "every forum i've ever been on"...i've also seen this repeatedly. hell, i've BEEN this once or twice. it's a real trap...i've seen people with wives, children, and careers go through half-decade-long forum flameouts because the ability to reinvent yourself via the typewritten word is just THAT intoxicating, and for someone with a more precarious life condition it's like heroin for the soul. been there, done that. ow.

everybody didn't encourage him. i gave him space (no pun intended) for a good while, on the notion that one observes the local social mores when joining a new community. however, as some of you will have noticed, i have a very limited tolerance for taking shit from people, and when he started in on me i went to my default stance of "i am a concave mirror: whatever you emanate at me i will concentrate and reflect back upon you." this at least kept him from doing anything other than snapping at me like the neighbors' mean but ineffectual dog when i walked by, but i'm not proud or anything. i should have just ignored him. but it's true that someone, at some point, should have said something. this, historically, has always been the failing of countercultures...freaking freely ends up in junkies, STDs, and death in a dirty basement or in the mud at some shitty festival somewhere because it's uncool to say "stop...don't."

but on the other hand, my intention when i got up today was to post and say that despite the fact that i think Spaceritual had been an absolute dick the last couple of days, i find the stealth moderating with apparent personal animus really unsettling and unacceptable. i've seen what happened on other forums when moderators used their power to settle personal scores...the result has always eventually been gross disruption and division of the forum into pro- and anti-mod camps and the derogation and loss of respect for the moderators. moderators, by definition, ought not to be immoderate.
