So when you and your band write/put together a song do you actually ask each other "do you think people are going to like this?" or "what can we change so people will like this more?"
If that's the case, it sounds to me like a miserable way to go about things.
Also, I would think that the majority of innovation/expansion throughout music history came about from the opposing mindset.

No, that would be fucking stupid. But that's the fruity hipster shit I'm talking about, you've created a false dichotomy where it's either "I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks!" or it's "let's only make passionless pre-chewed pop music". It's obviously somewhere in between, and different musicians are at different points on a spectrum between not giving a fuck and making boring music.
Although it seems like you understand what we're saying and it just "rubs you the wrong way" to say you care what other people think. That will fade with time.
If you knew anything about me I think "fruity hipster" is the one of the last phrases you would use to describe me.
As little as I care about what others think of my music, I care far less about your opinion of it for you too, will fade with time.

I think Disaster Area has/had/will have the right idea:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on Disaster Area:
Disaster Area, a plutonium rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones, are generally regarded as not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but also as being the loudest noise of any kind at all. Regular concert goers judge that the best sound balance is usually to be heard from within large concrete bunkers some thirty-seven miles away from the stage, whilst the musicians themselves play their instruments by remote control from within a heavily insulated spaceship which stays in orbit around the planet - or more frequently around a completely different planet.
Their songs are on the whole very simple and mostly follow the familiar theme of boy-being meets girl-being beneath silvery moon, which then explodes for no adequately explored reason.
Many worlds have now banned their act altogether, sometimes for artistic reasons, but most commonly because the band's public address system contravenes local strategic arms limitations treaties.
This has not, however, stopped their earnings from pushing back the boundaries of hypermathematics, and their chief research accountant has recently been appointed Professor of Neomathematics at the University of Maximegalon, in recognition of both his General and his Special Theories of Disaster Area Tax Returns, in which he proves that the whole fabric of the space-time continuum is not merely curve, it is in fact totally bent.
Disaster Area are fronted by Hotblack Desiato.

No bad blood dog, wasn't calling you a fruity hipster that's just my opinion of that kinda talk. I really do think you'll find it's just some kind of visceral reaction you're having to admitting that other people's opinions matter.

This post is too ironic for me to take in at this juncture.

I'd rather just sound like one than be one, especially one without a job...

It's better than being a vegetably hipster.
But seriously, I'd rather be a hipster than a self-absorbed, shallow, predictable metalhead. That's right, I said it!
I'm going to name my first child Hotblack. Hotblack Jasper [whatever I change my last name to]

Sounds like fun. And I'm not predictable, I'm consistent!

a hipster is someone who would deny the fact that hipsters actually exist, or indie(rock) as a genre.
The idea is they do things for appearances rather than realizing that PBR really
is delicious, but there's really people like that in every scene. Try going to a metal show with a pink T-shirt, tight jeans, and don't mosh/make references to Cthullu despite not having read a thing by H. P. Lovecraft. People will think you're a total freak even if you claim you love metal.
meh, 'tis what 'tis. No point in getting all ruffled about it.

Do what you like a fudge the haters.
mmmmmmm, fudge...
