Just happened to be listening to this today--Andrew Hill, with a nonet featuring (among others):
Howard Johnson - bass clarinet, tuba
Robert Northern - french horn
Julian Priester - trombone
Low brass rule!

Andrew Hill--Passing Ships
I like the low end on this one just as much (and the album as a whole even more than Passing Ships); the parts with John Gilmore on bass clarinet mixing with Cecil McBee's

bass playing are

I love the chamber-ish jazz, dubs, but I think "bs" stands for baritone sax not bassoon.

yeah, it doesn't sound like bassoon, does it? i think it would have sounded better with bassoon, though.

Ah, jeez. An acquaintance of mine asked me to sit in tomorrow for a Monk set at a jazz lounge. With him (guitar) and an ace horn player.
I reminded him I can't read the fakebook heads he sent me, and he said that was fine. I said I was best at drones and/or signal processing and he said this might not be a good set for those so I have no clue what he thinks I'm going to do. It could be hilariously bad... though I guess I can always choose not to play anything at any given point. I'm far more bemused than nervous about this.
