Just quoting myself from a few pages back.
warwick.hoy wrote:HAPPY NGD SONISOMBRERO. I didn't even know there was a Squier Thinline. Chinese?
I had a NGD me ownself:
2006 (according to that internetz serial number decoder) Gibson SG Gothic Morte (US). I actually had it on layaway for a month and today was the day to bring her home. These don't have the thick satin finish that the Epi Gothics have. Neigh it is a thin Satin Ebony Nitro.

This guitar is something of a basket case.

I picked it up for $300 plus the government from the Local GC

.
As you can see it's pretty slutty. There is a headstock repair. Some dings and wear. Someone attempted to recess straplocks and when that likely proved inconvienent they put standard strap button is off centered places. This feels like it was likely some punk's touring guitar. I brought the guitar to a tech buddy of mine and he tugged on the headstock a few times and he said the repair was stable enough. He did mention putting some structural epoxy on the repair and sanding it down to blend it in.
The truss rod is free and works so that's good.
Digging around I discovered that these originally came with Open Coil pickups and Active electronics,...but popping open the hood reveals that the active electronics have been gutted and the pickups replaced with passives, which I prefer for guitar. The neck pickup is lovely. Nice and bassy,...hot like a like. The bridge pickup is week seeming and really thin sounding. I pretty much always play on the neck pickup so that probably isn't a big deal.
The nice thing about buying used from GC is that they have a good return policy. I'm not completely sold on the SG. They did have a black 98 Flattop Les Paul Special that I checked out and really liked. Weighed a ton. They wanted $450 for it,...so I may wind up taking the SG back and putting the credit towards the LP.

warwick.hoy wrote:So playing the guitar more; it's fretting out on the bottom "E" string against the first fret. It's not a huge deal but I'm taking it back. Which is a shame cause it's an otherwise cool guitar. The LP Special has a hold on it until Aug 19th,...so new guitar day get's put off for a month. Or maybe they will push the fret back into place for me. I don't,...we shall see.
To clarify "not a huge deal". A fret out is a pretty big deal,...but I wasn't super pissed or anything. Just kinda disappointed. Still am cause that guitar could have been really cool.

one of each or like a coil tap situation>?
If I go for both, it'll be one of each. Most likely with the p90 in the neck position.

I also have miscellaneous other crap, but you know, this is new and hot.

I completely endorse this line of thinking.......

A PAF style in the bridge with a HBS P90 in the neck is a magical combo.

Yeah, I'll most likely end up going that route. I owned one of those funky looking jazzmaster copies that Rondo sells at one point, and have played several guitars with p90s, and I've always loved the sound of the neck position. That will most likely end up coming first since I don't really mind the sound I get from the stock bridge pickup, but the HBS p90 will definitely happen at some point within the next couple of months.

If your looking for an economical solution the GFS mean 90's are great for the price. I found them to be a lil throatier then the SD Phat Cat I had, which was a great pickup in its own right but had more upper mids and top end, which ain't my bag.
